MF231 alternator help please

DB MF231 tractor, alt went bad. Got a replacement and put it in, but the wiring seems wrong. With the key on but engine is off, the alternator is getting smoking hot. From my research, a red wire should go to the large terminal at the 12 oclock position, and a gray wire should go to the D+ terminal. Problem is, the tractor does not have wires of that color. There is a wire that comes from the starter. Does that go to the main terminal on the alternator? There is a thinner wire that comes out of wiring harness at the top of the engine. Should that wire connect to the D+ terminal?
