JD 50 series

Derril I inherited a old JD 50 with no generator and very little wiring. tractor turns over good but would like to know if it would start before I start putting on parts and wiring. I was told I could twist 2 wires together to start it but I don't know which ones that would be. I was told one would come from the battery but they didn't know which post to use. they didn't know where the other wire would come from to try to start tractor.
ponymare If its still orig, it will positive ground, on the coil there will be two small wires. One will go to the dist, the other to a voltage reducer, or to the switch. Hook that one to the neg post on the battery, that will give you fire to the points. But it will be direct, so don't hook it up till you're ready to turn it over, and if there is no voltage reducer, don't run it very long, you will burn up the points.
