JD 310 A oil smells like diesel fuel

Bill Row Working on an older JD 310A. Noticed oil smells like diesel fuel so I changed oil. Got running and oil still smells like diesel. Oil is not thin. Looks normal. Is this smell normal or is there another problem like bad injection pump.
ponymare If the oil level stays where its sopposed to, don't worry about it.
bill row Good point. Thanks
Dale Bill: There is a bushing in the front of the fuel injection pump, the input shaft that rotates from gear mesh rotates that fuel injection pump shaft and the shaft has some really special seals that are called umbrella seal that are very thin.

When those need replaced you have the symptoms you have written. When you have the injection pump off look very carefully at the inner bore of the brass bushing about an inch deep. I there is a groove in it from seal wearing replace that bushing or it will roll the inner seal as the shaft is installed.

The work is not that difficult and I change those without taking any of the timing rings out. Let us know if you need any detailed instruction on how to remove and re install a new bushing.
