2440 stearing play

nick louallen Just need some info on how to tighten the stearing wheel. On my 2440 Jd I just bought first tractor. The wheel runs up and down about a half round of play.
Leonard I've waited to see if someone else was going to try and help you but it looks like you are stuck with me. Lucky you!
Sense this is your first JD tractor let me first say that you have bought a great tractor. The 2440 is one of my favorites in this series and I was truly saddened when Deere quit building them.
As for your steering, I would have to consult a book to be sure on any adjustments. But you may not have a problem at all with any adjustment sense these style of tractors have a certain amount of wheel play designed in them. This being while shut down or off. If your steering is loose under power then I would first check all the components of the steering linkage. These series of tractors are famous for having a bad "Bell Crank". They also like to wear out tie rod ends and drag links. All of these parts can cause your free travel in your wheel. Your best bet is to talk to a Deere Ag dealer and see what they recommend. Good luck!!
