JD 4440 Quad Range clutch slipping
|Shawn Woods||I have a 1978 4440 with quad range. It was running fine, then wouldn't move forward or backward. The day after this happened, we tried to move it again. The tractor goes into gear and tries to move, but won't, and then it sounds like the valve body is kicking out, and then nothing. Changed the hyd filter and checked the pressure on the valve body "clutch" port. The clutch has 95 psi @ idle and 145 psi @ 2000 rpm. The clutch will not engage and you can shift through the gears without grinding. The tractor still has pto and remotes but the customer said the tractor didn't have very good brakes when they towed it in. Tried to remove the pump shaft but it was stuck in the housing. I'm leaning towards a pump failure. Any thoughts or suggestions? The only hesitation I have is should I change the rear pump (~$700) or may there be another problem?
|Mike||Could be the torsional damper on the flywheel that drives the trans. I did one last year, but can't remember if it was powershift or quad range. One has the damper, the other doesn't. Anyway, it broke off the hub so there was no drive to the trans.
|JD Mechanic||Sounds like you stripped the drive hub out in your clutch disk.
|Luke||Could be that the suction screen needs to be cleaned it it on the side of transmission behind the filter . We had this happen on our tractor and it worked once the screen was cleaned
|Hennie Loubser||Pulling disc harrow or in drive in D4 high gear it slips.
please advise, some people say the plates are finished.I checked the thin shaft running from the rear driving the pump, that is fine.
