jd 345 54inhc deck problem

rick third time using my john deere 345 54 inch deck with a kawasaki engine and there is a burning belt smell and the blades will not turn, after acouple second a loud screaching type noise is heard from under the engine. this only happens with the blades engaged. other than that its runs and drives beautifuly. what could this be. i looked uner the engine and there is a what looks like a gear/bearing maybe. don't know, any help is greatly appretiated
bontai Joe Sounds like you have a siezed bearing somewhere in the mower drive. The belt rubbing on the nonturning pulley is what is screaching, and making the belt smoke. You are gonna need to inspect the mower deck and all the drive pulleys to see which one doesn't turn (engine off!)
