John Deere 110 pre compression knock
|Jon||~1974 John Deere 110 with K241 Kohler engine (10HP), recently did a rebuild: crank, piston rings. Ridge reamed top of bore and deglazed bore, new components all standard bore size, also new capacitor, coil and points. Seem to have a pre-compression knock now? Happens with no load or light load, when adding throttle, or driving and govenor is modulating engine. Checked "S" (spark) mark on flywheel, points open when "S" at top of sight hole in engine shroud. Regular gas, ~few weeks old at best. Comments, suggestions?
|Tony Bachler||We have rebuilt many kohler singles. # 1 the timming is adjusted by the piont gap;; ## 2 when they are honed out, it will increase the piston clarence Sometimes causing a piston slap. This is a knock that will drive you crazy, If the crank shaft clarence is correct, I like ,002 On the plasti gage. As for the knock. use earplugs; It wont hert anything;
|Jon||Thank you to Tony & Gene. We shimmed the points to have "S" appear in middle of inspection hole, still noisy. Disassembled engine, re-measured new/old rod, and decided to put original rod back in, much less noise. Old rod slightly tighter, -0.001" and wider +0.002" on crank journal vs new rod. JD110 up & running again, fingers crossed. Thank you again, I may also try a tank of high test for grins too.
