318 charging

Branden Fonk hello I was wondering what the alternator ouput amperage is on my 318 p218g and why the battery light comes on when you turn the headlights on and when you rev it up high the light will go out. I just didnt know if it was not charging enough or the lights drawing to much current

Thanks

Dave Branden - The 318 uses a stator setup to generate AC current, and the voltage regulator/rectifier converts the AC to DC (12 volts). The charging system is 20 amps. Most likely, your voltage regulator/rectifier is weak, or you may have some dirty connections. If the battery light is coming on with the lights on, I'd check all the connections at the battery, starter, ignition, and PTO switches. Make sure they are clean and free of corrosion. Also check the main ground connection on the block and the secondary ground connection under the battery tray. To check the voltage output, pull the middle wire from the voltage regulator/rectifier. Check for DC voltage, using the engine block as the ground point and the middle terminal as the positive point. You should get at least 13.5 volts and no more than 14.5 volts. If the voltage checks, and you've cleaned all the contacts, then I'd check the wiring to the lights. If the voltage does not check after cleaning all the contacts, post back and we can go from there. - Dave
