John Deere 318

Kenneth Lowe After I run my front PTO for a while and turn off the PTO it will not come back on, also the battery lite comes on and stays on while the PTO switch is on, is that normal? I pulled the clutch and checked it and it seems to be ok, I hooked up direct to the battery and got a good magnetic field. Could bad PTO switch be causing problem. After I reassembled the clutch on the motor and it worked like it should but then after it heated up it stopped working again, I ajusted the air gape to .018. Thanks for any help
Willie Ken,

Your symptoms sound similar to my 318 - see the posts above.

Sasha Check the field winding coil to see if it is worn, or bulged out. mine was working fine, until it heated up and rubbed against the clutch housing, then it wouldnt come back on. i replaced the field winding coil for $125
Sasha be sure to reset the gap. - also you can check the voltage to the pto winding coil by removing it. there is one wire that leads to it, i think it is a blue wire, it should have 12v or more when you turn the mower and pto switch on at high idle.
