JD 111 Backfiring and Valve Adjustment

Don Ehrlich My 1 year old tractor has started backfiring. The JD tech suggests I check valve lash and said to be sure *both* pistons are at top dead center before doing it. I know the two pistons are always moving in opposite directions (right?) but for the life of me I cannot turn the engine to a position where both are at TDC at the same time. It looks to me like the pistons do not move in opposite directions and never hit TDC at same time! I guess I really don't understand my tractor so I gotta yell for help.
