Hello jono, welcome to the N series tractor forum. You didn't say what tractor you have, but I would think that a top cover gasket leak would show fluid leaking out. I have to assume you have checked the fluid level. Try removing the inspection plate, the one with the dip stick and see if you can see anything going on in there. Look for fluid spraying from something. Parts can be expensive. It's best to try to pin it down before you start throwing parts at it.
