My NAA has a piston pump but I don't have to engage the PTO for the rear lift to work. I usually have a 6' scraper blade on the back so it has some weight. My hydraulics aren't choppy, have you checked the fluid level with cylinders extended? What does the oil look like? might benefit from changing it.
