Sounds like you have bad leak at the piston. You could remove the righthand round plate with the dipstick in it and watch when it is running and lifting. I bet you will see a lot of fluid coming down from the top. should be little to none.
Just guessing but maybe the RPM BIT is that it leaks less with the lower pressure of lower rpms.
While dropping when clutch is depressed is not right, normally it is not a problem unless you are having lifting problems.
How does the oil look? might be time for a good clean out and new oil. relief valve or control valve may be getting sticky also.
