yanmar 1500d steering
| mark | noticed on my tractor this weekend that the steering wheel slips on the steering shaft if it is turning under heavy load. i am sure that the slipping is at the steering wheel and shaft and not internal. is this aprees fit and what is the preffered way to take the steering wheel off. Trying to loosen the nut holding it on and keeping the shaft from spinnin is not easy
| norm | The wheel is a spline fit on the shaft. If what you are saying is true the shaft can only turn to the internal stop.
| Tim | when you remove the nut look to see if there is a Woodruff Key, could be one was never put back after a removel of the steering wheel at some time? or could have simply been sheared,..
| mark | When I turn the nut the shaft turns also and there does nit seem to be any play at all. treated it as right and left handed treads. didn't want to bugger up the shaft by trying to grip it with something to hold it. Is there some easy way to remove the nut that I am missing. Can the shaft be pulled from the case with out major disassembly
| norm | Let's start from the beginning. If you attempt to loosen the nut, (CCW), and it turns with the shaft, independent of the steering wheel, then the shaft should bottom out and you can loosen the nut. If the nut, steering wheel, and shaft all continue to turn, then you need to didassemble and rebuild the steering assembly.
| mark | when turning the nut it will turn the shaft independent of the steering wheel if you hold the wheel. there is some friction though. the shaft will also turn the front wheels but I don't know if we went far enough to bottom it out. I did not want to put alot of strees on the steering components. there looks to be a cover with 4 bolts at the end of the shaft where it goes into the case. Is this were I acess the steering assembly. The tractor is a grey market 1979 and it only had 80hrs on it and i have less than 1500.00 in it so what eever repairs it will need I think i will come out a head. Can I get A manual for it and if so where. Also in case I didn't say it does have power steering in case that matters. Thanks for the help

| Tim | you could use a impact tool and socket to remove the nut just as you would those on a car wheel, left turn to loose, with it having power steering and you stated the wheel would slip under a load while turning, You realy need to get a look at the splin inside, or even the part where is pressed into the st-wheel itself, it may have been broken loose from the bond, although you could see this with the cap off the center, I have heard of many 1500 and 1700 having replaced the steering gearbox, But if I understand what your saying, its only sliping at where the wheel attached to the splines and this would indicate possibly wrong steering wheel? very rarely would these splines be stripped especially with power steering assist. unless of course at some point and time the power steering was not working and the tractor was still being used could have possibly stripped it out under force of turning, |
