ym2000 knocking sound

J.L.Smith I have had a ym2000 2 cyl. for about 2 years. It started making a slapping sound, not the normal yanmar knock. I am thinking maybe a rod bearing? any ideas?
Al They are noisy, but if this is a new sound, especially if if doesn't normalize when warm and at higher RPMs, reach for the wrenches.
norm A fuel problem can cause a knocking difference. Change the fuel filter and use a diesel additive.
j.L.Smith I tried to spin it over this morning and the noise sounds like a hammer splapping with every revolution of the engine.
norm You "TRIED" to spin it over? Sounds like it definitely needs attention.
J.L.Smith I drained the oil, pulled the pan, looks clean, from what I can see everything looks ok on bottom end. pulled the valve cover looks ok there to. Valve clearance, maybe a bit on tight side. There did seem to be a little gunk in the intake part of the head, from what I could see though not enough to matter. The noise can be heard when the engine is spun over by the starter. Could the noise be coming from the injection pump?
