YM1720D Running hot - and a little white smoke
| Steve Woods | My YM1720D started running hot while running the bushhog. I checked all of the obvious things related to the radiator (fins clean & not smashed, fan belt good & tight, screen clean, etc.). I had added a little anti-freeze a few days earlier so I thought the AF to water mix may be too high so I removed some and added water - this did not help. I did notice a very small amount of white smoke when the engine is running. My understanding is that this may indicate the head gasket is bad. There is no trace of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. My questions are: -- Does this model have a thermostat? (I don't see anything that looks like a housing for it) -- Does this model have a water pump or a syphon system? -- Would you think it is the head gasket and I have caught it before getting bad enough to allow fluid exchange? -- If it is the head gasket, what other parts should I look at changing along with it? Any info. would be greatly appreciated. |
| norm | It has tstat and waterpump. can't tell you about the head gasket. You need to troubleshoot. Is it losing water, (blowing it out the exhaust as white smoke?) Are there bubbles in the coolant when engine is still cold? You need to remove tstat to check.

| Al | To answer your last question, you could consider new head bolts, and with the engine exposed (hood removed), when it's running with the new gasket is a good time to check the valve adjustment.

| Steve | Thanks for the info. There is no white smoke in the exhaust and no bubbles in the coolant. The smoke I have seen is coming from somewhere towards the lower right side of the engine. I will check tstat. I have a service manual from Hoye on the way, I should have a better idea of where thigs are once it arrives.
