Yanmar 1700 oil leak - major problem???
| Justin Wakeland | Just bought a yanmar ym1700 and after bushhogging for 30 min. or so I noticed oil running down the right side of engine. It appears to be draining or leaking from the head gasket area. Is this normal or should I demand my money back? Please give me some advise on how serious the problem is and what's the pro's and con's of keeping the tractor and just adding oil?
| Danny | Not normal, maybe valve cover gasket leak? Danny |
| Al | If it's what the oil looks like on the dipstick (if it were a bad HG it would look blacker) I'd first see if the valve cover wants tightening. Even a new cover gasket is an easy fix, but you have to get the gasket. The strength of a refund demand depends on the seller's undertakings around the purchase. |
| Norm | I honestly have never heard of anyone demanding their money back because of an oil leak on a 30 year-old machine.
| caycecherry | I can tell you exactly. I just had the same problem. The head is warped. You will have to fix it. The head gasket will probably look fine when you take it out. The good news is that it is just a day project the remove it, and it only cost about $20 to have the head machined. (just from my experience)
| caycecherry | P.s. replace the head gasket anyway ofcourse even if it looks good when you get in there.
| Al | A cover leak can be ignored (just replenish the oil) or easily fixed, but a HG leak should be properly fixed before working it further. Maybe one in five to ten Yanmars need the HG replaced once in a 50-year worklife.

| Justin Wakeland | After working my ym1700 for about 3 hours, I noticed that the oil is leaking from a bolt that has a thin tubing attached to it. The tubing runs close to the exhaust pipe. Should I tighen the bolt or should I take it back. Many people tell me I'm making a big deal out of nothing. The dip stick shows no oil loss but I would guess that the tractor leaked about 8 to 12 tablespoons worth of oil in 3 hours of work. I'm worried that down the road the problem will get worse and I'll be stuck with the repair. Take it back, demand the seller to fix, or forget it? Opinions...
| Al | No biggie; the underhood temp changes and vibrations can weaken any small fitting. Tightening the bolt might work depending on the type of fitting, but don't overdo the attempt. It's not under high pressure, so you could clean and dry the area thoroughly and pack it with a name brand "quick weld" epoxy-type product and let it harden (works long-term about half the time). Best, any car or tractor mechanic can easily replace it. I wonder if the thin tube is for instrumentation, such as oil pressure. Can you trace where it goes? You could sketch where it's leaking and ask the seller if he'll replace the fitting, but it depends on distance, if it's a servicing dealer or a private owner, and the warranty. |
| norm | It's an oil line with copper washers.
| justin wakeland | How do I fix the problem? Is it a major concern? Will it occur on another part of my tractor? Please give me some advise--thanks!
| norm | I recommend that you return the tractor and get your money back. You will never be able to maintain a 30-year-old machine.
| justin wakeland | Norm, I hope you're not trying to be a smart a**. I simply want some advise. I know nothing about tractors or oil leaks and need some help. I've researched and found that by replacing the two copper washers, my problem should be solved. I've just got to find them.
| Jason young | I have the same problem I believe. It leaks from a bolt that is attached to a thin line which has oil running through it. I've changed the washers with old ones and tightened the bolt but it still leaks. I just keep a check on my oil level. Maybe I should worry about it but I don't.
