YM1700 Knock sound for about 5 min after start

Mike Reid I just purchased a YM1700 and it sounds fine after the engine warms up, but has what sounds like a knock until it warms up. Is this normal?

I have newer skid steers with diesel engines but they do not sound the same they are 4 cyl engines.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike Reid Sorry, forgot to mention that the faster you rev it the less the knock noise.
Al Yannies clatter, especially two-cyl models when fresh started & low revs. Think of all the wear and tear you save on the horn.
Jess Five minutes sounds a bit too much, but all Yanmars do it. My 1810 does it for a short bit. A few years back on this site someone called it the Yammer Hammer.
Bob I have a YM1700. Yes, it is normal. Sounds like someone hitting a manhole cover with a sledge hammer. It does get a little quieten down after warming up though.
caycecherry Yip, My 1700 knocks like crazy. Even after new rod bearings. That is just the way it is. It will run all day like that if you keep it cool. Hey side note..... Save yourself a lot of worry and buy the after market water pump kit. It will make you enjoy it a lot more. I wish I had put mine on about two years ago instead of two months ago.
