1973 MF 50A Won't start

stewart My MF won't start, I've had this problem before, it acts like the batteries are dead but they are fully charged, it will work great time after time and then all of a sudden it won't start, its almost like there is a short, and if I have a battery charger going when I try to start it smoke comes from the starter/solenoid area, could the ignition switch be bad?
Jeff Z. The first thing to do is take the time and take apart every wire connection and clean them good and tighten. Most of the time it is a dirty or loose connection somewhere. Start were you see the smoke.
stewart So I did that as much as I could get to including the battery terminals. I also removed and replaced electrical wire tape on the harness making sure to isolate ground and power wires. I noticed that the rubber grommet that seals the solenoid connection into the starter is melted, probably where the smoke came from. The starter was recently rebuilt, a couple of years ago and I pulled it last year and took it in to be tested, they said it was in good condition. The batteries have a full charge, I turned the lights on and tried starting it and they dimmed quite a bit.
