MTD transmission problem

Brett I have an MTD 12.5 hp riding mower with a transmission problem. The forward progress of the mower stopped abruptly, smoke and the smell of burning rubber came from beneath the seat. After shutting off the engine, i was not able to roll (in netual) the mower. The only way i could move the mower was to lift one rear tire off the ground. When the wheel on the other side was rolling forward, the wheel off the ground was rotating backwards. All the pulleys and etc seem to be fine. The mower is 10 years old.

Can this transmission be re-built or am i looking at a new tranmission or a new mower? Thanks

Deano Sounds almost exactly the same experience I had. Removed the rear end (springs and drive belt) which was not very difficult. Inside the transaxle a bolt that attaches the axle drive gear had worked loose and jammed against another gear. I bought a replacement for about $3 and reassembled the mower and everything is good again. Hope this helps. If you need more info I can send you copies of the diagrams from the manual. E-mail me if interested.

Jack Dhillon these are easy to repair
Dennis It could just be me, but that didn't seem to be realllllly helpful.

Perhaps you could elaborate. Are you recommending he dismantle the transmission and fix it, (will he need a repair manual and special tools?) or can this be fixed without opening the transmission and what steps do you recommned he follow?

No attack, your response indicated you knew what had happened and how to fix it, but just left a lot to be desired.

Mike Shea I have a 16 HP dayton (mtd) with what appears to be a constantly variable trans. It just expired last night. A puddle of gear lube on my front sidewalk. We pushed it to the shed.

I like the tractor and want to fix it. Where do I start???

J.R. Deano ,
Please send me a copy of the diragram for this transaxle as i am having the same problem with a
MTD 12-38.

Thanks,
J.R.

DV After a long search, I have ended up here. Sounds like I found some folks who know what's going on.

Our MTD 12.5/38 transaxle just split open, and I'm trying to find a new one. Model #618-0163 for a 600 series mower.

I've been to Sears, and checked out another online company, but I'm not sure I'd be getting the correct 6 speed transaxle.

I'd be very grateful for any info you could share! I don't really wanna push a mower all next summer! Thank you!!!

Brett For MTD parts try Connell Inc, Foxboro, MA. 800-456-5691. To give you an idea, a new transaxle on my 660 model was going to cost $290 last summer. Also try the 1-800-800-7310 for a parts supplier closer to your location. There are several MTD suppliers across the country.
Jack It is very hard to shift the gears on my tractor.
How would i fix this problem?

Robert I have the same exact problem.. Right now I am reassembling the transmission. One of the nuts came loose off the left half shaft, causing the gear to come off the shaft. Also, the nut got binded up into the other gears, locking it up..
Very simple to fix, just completely tear the tranny apart and bolt that crap back together..

If you run into the problem of those 5mm female star bolts stripping out, just grind off the heads with a grinder. Im talking about the 4 bolts that screw that thin metal casing to the big drive gear. Grab the back side of the bolts and unscrew. They stick out about 1/8, enough to grab with a visegrip plyers. One of them was in so tight the visegrip wouldn't work, so I took it to a local machanic shop, had them weld a nut on the little bit of the bolt that was sticking out then unscrewed it with a wrench.
Right now I am bolting everything super tight and applying a good amount of Loctite red to the shaft threads.. :)
This transmission is a very simple design, neat stuff :)

Greg Bunce Here is a list of all the associated part numbers for the transaxle discussed here;
618-0073, 618-0163(A,B,BP,D), 753-0556, 918-0163B and 918-0163D.
The part numbers above are for the entire transaxle assembly and any of the numbers are interchangeable though the 918-0163D part number is the current listed number. These should run you around $300 new. I have rebuilt many of these and MTD offers a nice blow-up diagram of the axle itself to help with the rebuild. It is quite do-able by any shade tree mechanic.

Chip Halverson I had a clunking moise in my Yardman when in gear. I stopped it, jacked it up and spun the wheels. No noise. I put in forward gear and a loud noise came from under the mower. I stopped and found a chunk of the transaxle casing and a large pin on the ground. The transaxle still seems to work. Any ideas onj what to do. It is transaxle mtd 618-0073.

Tim Pendleton i been doing small engine repair for some time now i run my own shop at nights and week ends i also work at a small engine shop during the days i fine if u take your time these trans axels are very simple to repair just take your time

Jim Trott It seems I have the same problem with my Transaxle as everyone else.Although mine will go in reverse but burns the belt and makes a loud thumping noise when I engage in the forward position. I have model # 618-0073 , I am looking for any info and or diagrams to help me fix this problem . I can take apart and put back together.
Thanks

Jason Im sure Im not far enough along with this fixer-upper i got off of ebay, but here goes. First of all, it needs a new battery. It is a 17 hp yard machine with 42"cut. It has the Tecumseh engine. The rear wheels are locked. Could this be a brake problem or should I expect bigger problems with the transaxle? I pick it up tomorrow if the guy has recieved my money order.

Melody I have problems with my Yard Machine Tractor wich is 13.5 hp and almost 8 years old. I don't know what happened that the tractor couldn't run. The engine is running good. It just the wheels couldn't go back and forward. Is that the problem with the gear or the transmission? Is it better to replace the transmission or get the new one? Thanks.
lilbrenda Well today it looks as though someting has happened to my trans unit housing. I found broken parts all clumped together in my yard . One small part has the model number 618-0163. Looks to be just the housing. Everything still works fine but you can see where all the grease was on the parts and the mower. Can I just get a housing replacment and if so does any one know where. Help please before I have to use this again.
lilbrenda yes you can go to your local lawnmower shop they should have manuals and part numbers to what u need sometimes your case can get hit from out side and bust alot of times your spidergear pin or bolt breaks and comes thru caseing u can buy just houseing but sometines buying the whole transaxel is cheaper u do have warrenty on new trans i would compare prices and go from there hop this helps out if need more help write back and ty
stratostreak This exact problem (described by the first entry on the thread) happened to my old MTD. All nuts bolts and springs should be clearly labled for easy reassembly..it really is a easy job. When I split my gear case, I discovered that the reverse gear welded itself to the shaft that it is supposed to freewheel on. Both of the bronze bushings on each end of the shaft were worn excessivly which in turn caused the shaft to bind and ultimately caused the gear/shaft to sieze. $70 in parts and I'd have it going...I found a junked out mtd for $50 that had a good trans. The root cause of this problem was inadequate lubrication/cooling...no means of adding or replacing the gear lube without teardown...mtd didn't design this thing to pull a 485lb gang mower while mowing for 2 hours at a crack (that's what I use it for). My soulution: drill and tap the gear case for a grease zerk!...now I grease the living snot out of it prior to each mowing and monitor the temp of it...when it gets very warm to slightly hot, I just shut it down and come back an hour later. MTD has made affordable mowers that have a life expectancy...they'll live a lot longer if guys like us learn how to properly maintain them.
ken i am having the same problem as everyone else and i'm looking for a diagram also would you be able to send it to me also thanks
Howard Goodbrand I have a Yard Machines rider with a MTD trans #618-0163B. I would like to know if you could send me a exploded veiw of it. I think someone else had it apart and either left something out or didn't put it back together right. I need to see if there is something needed that I need to buy. Thank you
Ross Same problem Brett. Overloaded the MTD while in low ratio and excessive pressure/lack of lubrication on reverse gear welded the gear to the shaft. Soaked the gear/shaft in WD40, put the gear puller in place tightened as much as possible then used the hot air blower until gear just to maximum hand heat. Gear reluctantly slid out but the metal build-up from the gear on the shaft needed the grinder to resuface the shaft. Works OK and your idea of adding grease should do the trick. Thanks, Ross
replicawatches Thank you for your site
Greg I am replacing the belt that goes from the variable speed pulley to the engine pulley on a lawn chief (black special edition) 42" deck, 17HP Intek with step through auto drive purchased in 2001. Since the original belt was broken, I do not know how it was originally installed. The model and serial no. tag has fallen off the bottom of the seat, so I have been unable to get a diagram from MTD. Can you assist?

Thank you!

Happy in Red Lion PA I have a MTD Lawn Tractor from new in 2002.I have'nt had anything but problems with that thing falling apart all over. The hood fell off, the muffler fell off, the rear pulley rubbed through my battery, the light socket melted, welded the rear braces. It's just very cheaply made. You would think it was made in China. The engine is the only thing i never had a problem with. Today my Transaxel housing cracked & fluid ran. Trans model # 618-0163B. I think it's time to buy a Simlicity. Hat's off to MTD, the largest maker of junk.
Jesmond I have an MTD 13 hp riding mower with a transmission problem. The forward progress of the mower stopped abruptly. The only way i can move the mower is to lift one rear tire off the ground.I have dismantled the transmission to find two crown wheel bolts had come loose and punched two holes in the case. The main problem i have is to try to work out how the transmission works,If i move the select lever from left to right it locks up in neutral and reverse, in forward it rotates fine. Can anyone help me with finding any diagrams or pictures on the transmission assembly or any info on how the trans works. Thanks
D. Brian Poelman Hi; just pulled a MTD 618 0073 transmission off a 12.5 hp ,wouldn;t roll in neutral,1 rear wheel went forward while other went backward. I discovered the brake wheel and pads were seized up on the tranny; after loosening brake unit and freeing brake wheel, it appears the axles are turning okay now. Is this a common problem? or is this not the real solution? Brian
Jay I just picked up a MTD Yard Machine, 17hp, 42" cut at a good price. Problem is that it runs great, moves forwad and reverse but moves very slow. Give me an idea what problem I should be looking for. Thanks

william Dawson i need a belt diagram for the blades on a 42 inch mtd can you help
JDW I've the same rear end - tranny in my 1990 MTD mower. I came here looking for an internal parts diagram; this is something I'm going to tear into it. Symptoms are just a screeching noise, I think I caught the problem before the thing exploded. At least the gears aren't fused or anything.

But the symptom "one wheel turns forward, one in reverse" is not a problem at all; that's characteristic of any rear-drive rear end. Just put an old rear-wheel drive auto up on a rack and give the rear wheels a spin, you'll see the same thing.

If anyone has the exploded view, please send it to me (or make it available online, using something free like divshare dot com).

Robert Trying to reassemble my MTD 618 0073 transmission and I wonder how much grease it needs in the case? And what specific grease should I use? THanks to this site I took it apart to find my problem was indeed a loose pan head screw on the differential gear. Guess that is a common problem. Any help would be appreciated.
canvasgeezer Need a 618-0009 case or whole trans also. Anybody have any luck finding one?
Paul Allen Your advice fits my problem exactly for out MTD 42A707. Its the 618-0163 axle that the bolt has come out. Do you have a pictures in a manual I can get via email? Anything else I should know?
jim I have a Yard Machine Millennium 18 HP. I can only shift from forward to reverse while the tractor is off. Can't shift while its running. It's like the shifter is stuck or something. Moves fine when I turn it off. What could be the problem?
Hay Ryd Mtd 12/38 12.5 hp tranny is slipping, this machine had a new tranny a few years ago. it has been used for pushing snow, it has always been hard to get it into gear, most times you had to hit the gear shift hard to get it to engage. I was hoping it would be a cheap fix and i could keep this thing running for a few more years.

Any Ideas??????????

DIY Yardman I purchased My Yard Machine 14 hp with 42" Cutter width in 07/2000, I am the sole owner & operator. Well on 04/21/2010. I lost my variable speed rear drive belt. A neighbor towed it to my house about 4 blocks away. I acquired a replacement MTD Belt 754-0180A from the local Lowes. I installed it and realized that after installation. I only had high gear #7 and it was iffy. I have the double bagger, power rack, spreader and the trailer. If I replace the mower. I'll have to purchase a new riding mower for $900-$1200 in addition to purchasing a new bagger unit for about $400 at a total of $1,300 to $1,600 price tag.

Don't get me wrong I am not cheap but the MTD has served me for 10 years and I've just become comfortable with it. I contacted MTD's Service Center they quoted $557.00 price for a new Transaxle Model 618-0163B (the tractor only cost $900 originally), which they'll probably replace with a 918-163D (upgrade).

I was towed 4 blocks in neutral (or push 450 lbs of dead weight the same distance)that shouldn't have destroyed the Transaxle. Otherwise, the MTD is in great shape, bump to bump, including the paint job. It just won't move at lower speeds.

Note: Cutting Grass at Speed #7 with a 14 hp it is unreal(there is a great potential of buring my yard with the tires). My MTD is out of service at this time.

OPTION 1: I need a quality used Transaxle, to get back on the Yard or MTD with blown engine to strip. DIY install it.

OPTION 2: I purchase a used Riding Mower of the same model. Put it in service.

OPTION 3: I need to purchase a new Transaxle. DIY install it.

OPTION 4: I purchase a new MTD Riding Mower with Bagger. Possibly another BRAND of Rider.

I haven't decided yet, but looking seriously at the minimal financial impact of for OPTIONS 1 and 2 presently. But, I may have to go OPTION 3, but as a last resort OPTION 4. The OLD MTD might be dismantled for parts and then remainder would go to the Salvage Yard. Thanks...

Norm Knott I have a 12 hp mtd. When mowing, it goes good for about 10 mins, then very slow slipping movement. I bought and replaced the rubber boot and changed the lube in the rear end. I am told that air is trapped in the rear end. HOW DO I GET IT OUT OR IS THIS THE PROBLEM?

Thanks

Gary Day I have a MTD 13am675g062 riding mower that makes a grinding noise while moving fowards but not in reverse. I took apart the transaxel because it sounds like it is coming from there and all the gears look perfect.. I don't understand why the grinding noise. It is so loud that I need earplugs. It mows just fine up or down hill but sounds lke gears are spinning together the whole time. Has anyone got any ideas? I am at a loss on what to do. I can't find wear anywhere inside the transaxle. I would imagine as loud as it is that something would be wore or damaged. The drive belt was almost completely destroyed from being so old... I am suprised by that. I think it has been the same belt for 15 years.
PATRICK I am in need of the following part for a MTD tiller part number 07-0379 input shaft. Please email if you have one thanks
Ashley Can someone send me the diagram of the transaxle? I'm having the same problem, as well.
Ken I have a similar issue with the rear wheels locked up. I had just changed the blades and reinstalled the deck. Drove it to the back yard and turned it off but could not push it into the shed even though it was in neutral. This has happened in the past and I was able to get it moving by rocking it until the wheels broke loose. I started it up and tried to back it up and got a lot of smoke. I assume from the belts turning against the locked wheels. I did lift the wheels off the ground and was able to rotate both wheels backwards and forwards by hand. Any ideas?
delbert how can i put grease in a mtd transmission
GOATMAN model yard machine number 13a8673g009 i need a belt number anyone please.
Jimmy D My MTD started vibrating and creating a bad smell. My best guess is that the transaxle is out or low on fluid and messed up. Does anybody know of any quick fixes or ways to check? From what I can tell and read on here, there is no way to service it.

I did not see it mentioned, but you guys looking for parts can go to partstree.com. They having better breakdowns than the owner's manuals you can find online and you can order the part you need. I have never ordered from them, but I have used the manuals a few times and they always help.

JohnR I have a 2005 MTD Yard Machine model #13AC762F729. My machine would not move when placed into forward or reverse. Also I could not push it in neutral as wheels would turn opposite direction(still engauged). I pulled tranny, inspected and did not see any problems other than dirty grease. Clean all parts except axle gearbox (could not access), replaced tranny. It now works in forward and reverse but neutral still hanging up. Also transmission whines while moving. Any ideas?
mike my mtd model 13AN668G205 lawn tractor doesnt want to pull and hesitates in gears 1,2,3 and pulls like it should in gears 4,5,6 . i had recently replaced the upper drive belt under the seat and battery area . i checked the lower drive belt and it has a few cracks but nothing to keep it from pulling properly .could the lower drive belt be stretched enough to cause this?
Scott Lloyd My 2005 mtd tractor is making a clunking noise and will do this anytime while mowing down hill. The clunk is very loud and the drive at the axles is erratic at best (downhill).I have taken the transaxle out of the unit and have checked the transmission fnr shaft and gears(ok) I have removed and checked the spider gear assembly (ok)The nut and side gears on on the axles and are tight. I had to grind the rivets to open the case(axle gears)To make a very long story short i have to mow my lawn and hate to set the thing back together knowing that nothing has been changed.I see no wear on gears and transaxle appears to work well.Is there someone out there who has had this type of problem?
Wanda Pinkham I have a ride on mower that that slips out of first gear. What could that problem be and can it be fixed?
Gene I have a MTD 618-0073 and i have taken it apart but it seems to keep locking up and only goes in reverse! i DON'T IF A GEAR IS SEIZED UP OR WHAT. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A MANUAL ON THE PARTS BREAK DOWN TO SEE HOW EACH GEAR SUPPOSE TO WORK!IT SEEMS PRETTY EASY TO ASSEMBLE BUT SOMETHING IS STILL NOT WORKING RIGHT. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE!
Paul M. I have a Yardman with a 17.5 motor. The Other day I was cutting the grass and just about the time I got through, it wouldn't go in reverse of forward. I can see that there are 2 rotors which the belts are going around. The top one is smelling like rubber and puts out a fair amount of smoke. I set it on its side to look at it and I coudn't find anything wrong. When I put is back on its wheels, it run like a pro again for about an hour and it dont the same thing. I hope there is someonr out there who can help me!!! Thanks To All Of You, Paul M.
Lar When letting the 46" MTD down from changing a blade, the mower tilted and fell over. Now the mower will not go into/engage in drive. It will go in reverse and neutral. Any ideas what happened?

Paul Brogger Same thing happened to me. I my case (no pun intended), reverse bevel gear seized on its shaft, and hence forward motion impossible. In fact, I believe torque from the engine, or from me trying to push it, caused the transaxle case -- upper AND lower -- to break in half where the right-axle part attaches to the wider portion with the differential. (It's a clean break -- not stained with leaking lube, so it only happened recently.)
Looking for a replacement.

Douglas Fyfe I am restoring a MTD Yard Machine 10HP snowblower made in 2001. Everything works fine except when snowblower is running and in first gear within a few seconds of moving forward its slip out of first into third or fourth gear. I have tighten nuts bolts cotter pins and washers that connect shift arm, shift rod and and shift handle for front mount handle. I took friction wheel off of axle mechanism then put friction wheel back on. Now I can move the friction wheel an inche when blowe is shut off and not using shift handle. Is the friction wheel on to loose? How do I tighten the wheel?
M Duncan I'm stepping in late on this thread. I have a similar problem as the person who asked the original question, My MTD mower was working fine at lower speeds and reverse. But felt like it was bouncing in and out of "gear" in the higher speed ranges. Now it wont even move if forward. Works fine in reverse still. If it is something like a bolt backed out that I can repair, great. I have found a local lawnmower graveyard that has several of these and will let me have a transmission/transaxle assembly for $100. What I need is access to a service manual. Anybody have a manual in pdf form they could send me?
Jerry Differential started leaking and then mower would not move on 2006 Yardman model 13AX605G755 riding mower. Could probably repair this myself if anyone has an idea of what I need to look for.

Carlton Hedgepeth I have mtd yard machine shift on the go riding mower, 15 hp with 42" CUT, THE REAR END IS LOCKED UP SO CAN U GIVE SOME IDEA OF WHAT IS CAUSING THIS OR CAN I FIX IT
