| Gary | I just purchased a Craftsman lawn tractor 21 hp , 48" cut , it is a automatic transmission also. I was having problems setting the parking brake and last evening I turned off the mower and after restarting could not go forward or backward. The transmission makes a horrible grinding noise ( do not recommend purging I tried that ). The blade does engage but if I try to disengage the transmission to push the mower the rear wheels are locked up. I did jack up the rear of the mower and then the rear wheels rotate freely( strange) I have contacted Sears and they are sending a repairman but I am curious if anyone has a clue what may be the problem. For $2200 I kinda expected more than 3 1/2 hours of mowing time. |
| john | get rid of the automatic trans nothig but a big pain in the rear got one on a craftsman never been right since i bought the mower

| Mike | Tell them to forget the repair man, and get a refund. A full one. If they refuse, take 'em to small claims court. I'm serious. You've got Me angry, and I didn't even buy the thing! Unreal : (

| Jack | problem is usually the brake won't dissengage,I have found this more common with the Sears,MTD,Yardman and others along this line of products, find the brakes and try to make them release with your hand, move the lever that the linkage from the pedal hooks to,sometimes you can feel or hear it release, also your parking brake may still be on and did not release Jack Dhillon Portland,Oregon

| Tim | Gary, Here's my story. I purchased a Craftsman DYT 4000 lawn tractor on April 21, 2003. Like yours, it was a 21 hp 48inch cut. I got less than 2 hours on it when I had the same problem as you, ie. I could not go forward or reverse. After calling Sears, they said it was probably just the transmission that needed purging. I told them I had already done that so they said I should make an appointment for a repairman. 7 days later the tech shows up. He has to lift the tractor up, take the deck off, and take another plate off under the seat. Apparently, a guide for a drive pulley was set incorrectly which caused the belt to slip. He fixes it and leaves. Fortunately it's under warranty or would have cost $180.00. |
| Doug | We are having the same problem. Ran the purge process with no result. I just scheduled a service call and it is the same 7 day wait but thankfully we mowed most of the lawn yesterday. When I talked to the service rep they checked to see if this is a known issue, nothing out there from their end. If we have taken the time to report it you know that there are lots of others out there with the same problem. We have put 27 hours on ours so far and like the tractor but if you can't move it, it's not much good. We'll see what they have to say.

| Mary Robinson | I bought a Craftsman Lawn Tractor in 1999. I is still just like new because we cannot keep the drive belt on it. I have had Sears try to repair it and several repair shops, but no one has been able to make repairs that will last. The mower has not been used but one day in two years due to this problem. I had a repairman come out last year, the belt was put back on and the first time I tried to use it, the belt came off again. I have talked to Sears, but to no avail. Help. |
| jose tan | i bought a "used" 2001 craftmans lawn tractor model GT300 with a Kohler 21 hp V-Twin engine in it with a 46" blade. would anyone kind enough to show or dirct me to where i can get an owners manual for it? Sears kinda not very helpful at all..very disappointed..thanks for any reply

| john | I got a craftsman 20hp model # 917.272910, bought in 3/2003, I recently tried to do a tune-up on it and when I got to the part about changing the oil filter, I realized there wasnt one. I had a cap over where the oil filter was supposed to be. I removed it to find that the cap had the male fitting and the mower had a female. Oil filters have a female, so If the motor has a female and the oil filter has a female, its pretty hard to screw on the oil filter !!!!! I called sears and they said it might be a defect. ANYONE ELSE COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM ??????????? Please let me know !!!

| Richard | The story sounds the same-different unit. I bought an all wheel steer 46" hydrostat 22hp through catalogue sales. It was delivered to my house assembled so they said-ready to go. All I had to do was install the 9 bushel grass catcher. I have a small acreage to take care of, about 3 acres to mow, not a big deal. After each use all the guards around the cutting deck pulleys would come loose, eventually losing all the screws. After drilling and retapping the bolts no big deal. Now I go to use this thing-only 3-1/2 months old, and a bearing on the cutting deck starts grinding. Then after that the main drive belt tensioner spring breaks stranding me in my field. That's it I'm returning this thing. I call catalogue sales and they are no help-I have to deal with a store. The store manager says I need a service call-why I don't know. The service guy comes and verifies what I already knew, couldn't even get to the drive tensioner and tells me that my other problem, the discharge chute plugging up every five feet is common and happens on all the sears models-unacceptable. He then tells me that this thing isn't meant for that big of a cutting job-grass is grassI figure. So I wait to see if they will take it back. By the way this one is made by Murray. Now my field is 6 inches high and climbing. I thought that for $3500.00 cdn for a lawn mower I couldn't go wrong. Now I am looking at some more serious machines like kubota or deere.

| Victoria | I've got a craftsman 20.5HP 42" automatic electric start lawn tractor. Would someone please help me out here, the problem is this... The tractor starts just fine, however when I start letting up on the "clutch/brake pedal" the god damn thing stall's! |
| C Fuller | I have a 21 HP Craftsman Lawn Tractor. I haven't had to many problems with it. But now it seems to lose power if I go up a very small incline. The clutch seems to be working fine, but I lose power just trying to get up the driveway. Any suggestions? |
| Glenn | I've got a craftsman 16 HP 42" automatic trans lawn tractor. Have the same problem as Victoria: when I start letting up on the "clutch/brake pedal" the stall's. Also stalls if I try to engage the mower. I checked all the pully's I could reach and all move freely. Any ideas?
