Craftsman 18 HP dies when clutch engaged????

Rino I have a craftsman 18hp mower that dies when the blade clutch is engaged. It is an electric clutch, blades turn fine, runs great until engaged. As soon as its engaged it kicks fuel out the carb and dies immediately. I have heard there is a safety switch that could cause this. If so, where might it be located? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rino
Kevin The saftey switch is under the seat when you get off the seat it will kill the engine or stop the blades
Jack what model is your lawn tractor
Rino Model # is 917.2559101
Ryan Konop I have a Craftsman 19.5 HP that dies when I engage the blade or release the brake/clutch. Have you repaired yours?

Rino I did solve the problem....Here's what I did...But I don't recommend this... on the frame, somewhere, is a little black box approx. 1/2" x 1" rectangular (engagement sensor). On mine it was below the wiring behind the dash on the frame. 1 bolt holds in on the frame. It has three or four wires going to the connector that slips onto the prongs of this little sensor. I disconnected it and it worked fine. I beleive this box senses whether the deck is in position before the blade will engage. Let me know if this helps, Rino
Cathy Please help my grass is growing!! I too have the same type Craftsman riding mower (shoot me)
It starts fine but dies instantly when I let off the clutch/brake peddle.
Is this from the same safety switch you are talking about?
Thanks, Cathy

Rino There is a sensor that was faulty on mine. I pulled the sensor off and it worked fine. I dont recommend this, but this is where I found the sensor. Lift the hood and look down inside below the back of the gauges close to the battery you should find a black sensor box approximately 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". Mine was hanging loose but had a flange for a bolt. Yours may be mounted to the frame. It has 3 wires running into it, 2 black, 1 red, and a black jump wire between 2 terminals. After pulling this sensor out, mine worked fine. Hope this helps, Rino

AJ craftsman 18.5 hp, electric start. starts and runs fine, go to engage the blades, mower dies, checked switches under seat, all wires seem to be connected, took belt off to see if was dragging, nothing found, runs fine, just dies when you go to engage what should be cutting the grass. Any ideas would be grateful..thanks
