Bought a new Sears Craftsman LT2000 with hydrostatic drive. Purged the transmission as in the owners manual. Drove the tractor around my yard for 10 or 15 minutes. Whisper quiet. Drove up and down mild ditches. Drove back to the garage, shut the tractor off and got a drink. Backed the tractor out of the garage with no noise other than the engine noise. Switched to forward drive and a nasty whine came from the transmission. Closest comparison would be a power steering pump without enough fluid in it. Tried reverse and the same whine came. The tractor uses pedals to control the forward, reverse, with a separate pedal for each direction. Both pedals felt kind of stiff when I first drove it, but now the forward pedal goes down fairly easily while the reverse seems to feel the same. HELP!

Hello Steve- Was there a good fix for this problem? I'm experiencing the same issue with a LT1000 and am pulling my hair out trying to find the root cause. Thanks for all replies.

Sounds like a common problem with Craftsmen. I just bought a new GT 5000 with Hydrostatic drive and found the same noise but I did not purge the Transmission. I called the service center and Gary told me to pull out the push mode shaft and run the mower in and out of forward and reverse to purge air from the fluid. I have not tried this yet but will this afternoon.

In my case, it turned out to be a seized brake/clutch mechanism. I'd have to dig up the invoice on what the tech did, but weathering can make the mechanism seize up. Watch out for that on models that are a little older. Simple shot of degreaser works I believe.

It sounds like were all in the same situation with these transmissions. I also have the same problem, it constantly whines and after about cutting for 40 minutes the tractor will not move anywhere until it cools down.
