First Time buyer - looking for advice

Claudia Hi, so glad to find this forum ..my husband and I just bought a house with 1/2 acre and want to get a riding mower. Don't have a huge budget (under $2500 hopefully?) but don't want to get the cheapest either - it will be a good investment. The lot is level, so we don't need anything that has to go up and down inclines. If possible, I'd like it to perform several other functions - grass collection (we don't usually mulch), leaf-collection and mulching, and an attachment for snow removal, so that we can get rid of our snow blower - and easy to operate for me, so I can do it without my husband's help.. What's the best bang for the buck out there? Feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
Ollie Welcome to the club! I just went through this through my reqirements are a little different (I always mulch, don't manage snow). Your budget is reasonable if you get a blade to push snow, not a blower. If you have deep and/or heavy snow, keep your snow blower.

John Deere repair parts are hideously expensive. Murray doesn't seem sturdy enough for me. Troy-Bilt is now made by MTD (who makes Yardman and others) and parts availability is still a question for me. Craftsman parts are easily available and don't seem too expensive. Most of the rest are way over your budget. My $.02 if I were you is a 42" deck with a 18-20hp Briggs & Stratton Intek engine.

I'm deciding between Troy-Bilt and Craftsman.

Having said that... with only 1/2 acre, I'd get a nice high-wheel self-propelled mower and spend the remaining $2,200 on a nice vacation! It will literally take you longer to dig out the lawn tractor and get it started than it will take to mow with the mower.

Jim ( WV ) You might want to look at the new John Deere L series. There are 4 of them within your budget I think. One thing about purchasing a Deere, is they have a "30 day promise", which means you can return the unit if not completley satisfied within the first 30 days for a full refund or trade on something else. You also have a 2 year warranty and dealer support and service. I just got the L120 and love it so far :). You can check them out at the following url. Good luck :)

Bill I wholeheartedly agree with you Ollie. I have a 1/2 acre to cut myself. My $.02 worth is that you need a good pushmower anyway and it actually takes less time to mow with just a push mower rather than a riding mower followed up by close cutting with a push mower. I personally have a high-wheeled push mower that mulches or bags clippings.
