POWR KRAFT 18hp.42" CUT AUTO TRANS. HYDROSTATIC DRIVE

Wilburt I recently inherited a used POWR KRAFT 18HP 42" CUT Hydrostatic Drive lawn tractor. It runs great, but needs a few mechanical replacement parts. Also I would like to purchase some attachments i.e. a plow, grass catcher, snow thrower, new battery & new blades. The lawn tractor was purchased at MGM. Wards in Detroit Mich. betw. the years of 1987 - 1991.I have the Model & Serial#s. Mdl# TMO - 3500006 135Q699G088.Srl# 1E255H20060.I do not have a owners manual, parts manual, or related parts supplier.I've unsuccessfully checked MTD'S web page for parts matching.I would appreciate any information about this particular tractor, is this tractor's performance history, one of durability & versatility? Does this tractor have a certain history of repair?
David Problem starting...possibly ignition or solonoid not passing enough voltage to starter...where do you buy parts like a new throttle/ or linkage for the hydrostat releif ? Also ...a dumb question.....it has blades with serated like edges (im assuming for mulching) Is the serated edge the side that cuts the grass or is it the other side? I just bought the mower and want to sharpen blades because the dont seem to cut that great, and need to fix the start problem...(thats why i cant start it to see which way they turn.:)
Samuel P. Gutilla I have one of these mowers. I dont think it is a mulching blade. Mine are cutting blades. The back part of the blade has a raised section.
To find the front of the blade just note blade movement while trying to start dont forget to
remove spark plug wires. Blades are probably just really dull. Pull them and sharpen them.

Gary I own one of these and when I went to use it this week, i discovered a crack in the fuel tank that was to large to repair.

Does any on eknow where parts can be obtained for these mowers, or a web site that has parts for them.

Samuel P. Gutilla Powr Krafst is really an MTD so just look for the
part number you need under MTD. Do you guys have
an operating manual with all the part numbers?
I have one and would be will to sell copies. Let me know. Here is the site where you can get
all the parts you need for your Powr Kraft mower.
http://www.outdoordistributors.com/homepage.htm

Samuel P. Gutilla I bought my Powr Kraft new back in 1995. It has served me well all these years and still has many years of life in the future. I have seen only one other in town. They have one at the chinese resturant I frequent. Same green color.
I think it is a wonderful machine. I have only put a few hundered dollars in maintenance for the past eight years. It sold new for about 1400 dollars but with sale price and rebates and
an additional 300 dollar discount for being not quite new (it was sold to the first buyer but
the deck was crooked and it would scalp the ground) I got the price down to less than 1000 dollars for an almost new machine. I got a maintenance contract and the deck was fixed under
warrenty.

Greg I have a Murray 17.5 with hydrostatic drive that is 6 years old. The Transaxle has begun to make noise and has become slugish and is alot slower than it used to be. The belt is in good condition. Does anyone know what might be wrong or how difficult it is to rebuild the transaxle if necessary. This mower is equipped with a Peerless Transaxle. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Tony hamilton I have just been given a POWR KRAFT 18hp.42" CUT
AUTO TRANS. HYDROSTATIC DRIVE. It needs a few
repairs but I dont even know the model number or
serial number. Where would you find them. I have
looked but havent found them. I need the two
belts, both back tires, and a new soloniod so the key
will start it. Any help would be great.
Thanks Tony Hamilton

TODD Tony... If you lift the seat, esposing the battery, look directly under the up-turned seat and you will find the numbers you need. Sears does sell most of the parts, just check the back of the belt or other related package for the replacement model they fit. As for the solinoid, check with the engine mnfr. Mine is Brigg and Stratton and a local dealer had just the one I needed
Tony hamilton Thanks Todd, but there are no numbers on this that I can find any where. Not even under the seat. I have taken most of it apart and found all the parts that I need. I now know that it is a 1995 by the code off the motor but that's al I can find. I found a real good source in the area for crossing parts. If I bring in what I need he has crossed or found it for me. I had to replace the starter switch, solenoid, battery, both back tires, both belts. and only have one more electrical problem. When you put it in reverse it dies. Its grounding out for a bad switch or something. I just haven't had any more time to look at it. I have worked out most of the bugs. Mower works great.
I'm just trying to get my car back now. I should get it back maybe Friday. I'm having a supercharger put in it.
Thanks for the help, if their is anything that I can do for you then just let me know.
Tony

Rick Cherry Does anyone know the size of the belt that drives the mower deck, i.e. The Engine to Mower Deck belt. It looks as though it is a very wide belt (large pulleys) but it only has a 1/2" belt on there now... and it's not working well (slipping) now.

Thanks, Rick

len anyone have a diagran of how the drive belt goes oround the pulley cogs?
theduke22@hotmail.com
Thanks

C. W. KIrby Tony, there is a switch in the shift control that cuts the motor off when the blade is engaged. You have to raise the blade all the way up to backup. I have found that I can get around the cut-off switch by putting it in reverse for couple of seconds and then taking it out. If you do it right with enough engine speed the tractor will start to backup slowly.
C. W.

Ted As anyone ever replaced the blade - Spindles or bearings on this mower? Does the deck remove easily? Should I order additional nuts and bolts along with Spindle Assembly? Thanks in advance.
Doc Levingston David, the negative battery cable bonding for this lawn tractor has too much resistance to carry the high current needed for starting when cold. I use a high amperage battery charger with the negative cable connected directly to the frame or to the oil drain from the motor. I connect the positive charger cable to the battery positive terminal. For particularly hard starts or to bypass the swith and solenoid, I connect directly to the starter motor terminal with the positive cable. Be careful, should you choose to do this, as the starter will engage immediately when you connect no matter what configuration your mower is in. I also buy a new battery every year to eliminate a lot of starting problems.
P.S. Now I am having trouble with the throttle and fuel supply to the engine. The only way I can keep the thing running is by applying full choke. Any suggestions? Anybody?

JC I have a powrcraft hydrostat with the B&S engine. It started to sputter but I can't find a carb adjusting screw. Is there one??? Also, now it cuts off when I let off the clutch (even if it's in neutral). I can't find a safety switch on the clutch to see if that's it. The trans isn't locked. Help!!!
JC Never mind, I fixed both probs. It was simple after I took a break and went back to it. 30 min. tops.

brew2 Very strange. I have purchased many parts on the MTD site thru LOWE'S in my town. I also downloaded a 26 page parts manual from MTD which is right on the money. Parts seem to be readily available for most of what I needed. Briggs & Stratton has all the engine parts also. I lost the magneto with the same symptoms as were described below.

Esther Quement I live in the San Jose California area..
being a non mechanical woman, does anyone know
of a shop that would tune-up my PowerCraft
Hydrostatic Drive 18.5 tractor? All the above
dialog is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Bob Guy Samuel What are you asking 4 the operating manual & how would you deliver.
roy I need diagram on the deck belt for a 46" power craft. thanks for any help.

W8GLguitarGARY I also own a Power Kraft Hydrostatic Automatic 18HP, 42" cut, green riding lawn mower. I got it used off my local craigslist. I paid $350.00, in 2009. I need an owner's manual, so I can determine where and how to change the motor oil, and what grade and viscosity oil to replace the old, black, dirty oil, now contained in the crankcase. Does anyone know what number oil I should use and how many quarts and what number oil filter I should use for operation of the mower to pick up heavy oak leaves in November in a cold weather state, like here in Michigan? If anyone can download the proper Power Kraft manual to my email address I will gladly pay you for your good deed, via payPal, thank you, no spam, please, and please include the words: PowerKraft Owner's Manual" in your email subject line. Thank you, very much, Gary in Grand Rapids, MI.
Dale Boyd I am recently in possession of my late brother's Power Kraft, Twin Cylinder, 18/42 Automatic Trans.Hydrosatic Drive lawn mower. It appears not to have been used for some years. There was no Owner's Manual to help me as I attempt to get it up and running. I will appreciate your directions as to how I may obtain one.
Justinyo So I was driving along and mowing the grass when the tractor came to a stop. It was still running and didn't make any noise. Right before it happened the tractor started to be a little jumpy. I have a Powrcraft with a hydrostatic trans. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is it the trans or transaxle? Any insight would be much appreciated.
