massie freguston mf12 transaxle

howard junkin	when i parked my tractor a couple of weeks ago it was fine. when i went to use it a yesterday it would not go. apon inspection i found that the imput shaft is jammed. the rear wheels turn in oppisit directions when turned by hand and it goes into the gears ok. any ideas thanks howard
mark	Have been told that if you pull up on the gear shift lever on Massey's while trying to shift, you can jam up the gears in the transmission. The article said that you could pull the cover off the transmission and with a little fiddling, get the gears back into alignment with your hand or a light force with a rod or something. I'd look at the underneath side of the shift rod and see where things would go astray if the rod were raised slightly. Then look in that area in the transmission. It said that you should have the load off the transmission which means engine off (of course) and be on flat ground, maybe a little rocking of the thing while trying to get the gears back in place. The article did not suggest that anything would be damaged when this happens. The reversing of the rear wheels is what the differential does for you and is no problem. They only go the same direction when driven from the input shaft, not the other wheel. Good Luck, Mark
Ronald Miles	Make sure that the transaxle is properly filled with grease. It may have run dry. Fill it and let it soak for a few days. That may allow it to break free. If the bearings at the input or brake shafts have somehow frozen because of mosture, you might try injecting a bit of light lubricating oil under the lip of the oil seals where the shafts enter the housing, taking care not to break the seals, as the rubber may be brittle. When the lubricant has had time to soak in and/or the transaxle refilled, try turning the input shaft while you attempt to change gears. Do not put a great deal of stress on the input shaft with the transmission locked, as that could cause internal damage. If the tractor is raised so that both wheels are off the ground, I would think it normal for one wheel to go backward when the other was rotated forward, and visa versa. This is the normal action of the differential when the transmission is in gear. Lastly, it is possible that the brake on the transmission is frozen in the ON position. That is the easiest problem to cure. Check and make sure that the breaking strap is not locked on. I wish you luck. I have an MF 12 with a belt varispeed drive, which recently went out on me.
