Tecumseh exhaust

Phil The aftermarket 10hp Tecumseh motor a relative installed on a Gravely lawnmower which I later inherited(no one else wanted it)has a muffler which exhausts forward blowing on your pantleg. The motor can not be turned 180 degrees. I have been told if I put an exhaust pipe with a 180 bend so it blows reward could burn the valves due to screwing up the back pressure (or whatever). I love the mower otherwise. What say you?
Joe Useing a 180 deg exhaust pipe setup in the long run will probably cause exh valve problem(due to backpressure),a better setup is trying to use a 90 deg setup, with a short nipple & 90 deg plumbing elbow or if you have the room, use an electrical 90 deg hw sweep, with a kohler/tecumseh 4" muffen type muffler on end of either, you didn't mention model/style of tractor(fr/rear eng) or mod of eng(hh/hm or vm)the hm/vm eng can be a problem clearing air filter assembly.
