Briggs & Stratton Twin Cylinder 16 HP

Tony Zeller I have a B&S 16 HP Twin Cylinder I/C Plus and one the exhause valve seats has become dislodged. I tore the head off and the exhaust valve is out a little and the round seat is just floating around. Can anyone tell me how this valve seat goes in? Is it pressed in or can I tap it gently back in without damaging it or do I have to tear it completely down to have put it back in place?

Thanks

Tony

jed1950 it depends on how long it has been runnong like that,is it real loose or will it go back in with ease,if it is too loose you will to have a machine shop install a new one,is it is a little loose I have removed the plugs so the motor can be turned by hand and turn so that the valve was off the seat and then center the seat on the valve and turn it back so that the valve pull the seat back in and holds it in place, then use a center punch and punch it in three equal distance places around the valve seat(punch on the metal just past the loose valve)this will hold the valve in place then use a flat large punch and use it around the valve, this will expand the metals around so the valve will be tight, once this is does reseat and adjust and you are does, hope this makes since to you,
davey turn thr flywheel till exahust valve is opened up as far as it will go so the seat is loosend. gently tap seat back into block using even strokes around the seat until it is back in place. turn flywheel till exahust valve is completly closed and place pice of wood over the valve and hit with hammer to make sure the seat id all the way down in its boss on the block. take a small punch and punch the casting around the valve seat trying to be as close to the saet as possible. do not overdo it tho. just 1-2 nice taps with hammer for each indentation should do it.
davey oops..someone already posted before me..must be faster typer than me lol
davey the most common cause of valve seats dislodging is the engine overheating. while you have head(s) off, check the cylinder cooling fins to make sure thay are not clogged with grass and debris also, make sure that the fuel/air mixture is not too lean.
Tony Zeller When I turned the flywheel so that I could get the exhaust valeve to come out as far as possible I discovered that the seat is just sort of flopping around. When I closed the exhaust valve I discovered that the valve can be turned and does not fit snug at all. I think that their might be more going on here than just a dislodged vavle seat. Does anyone agree or have other thoughts?

Thanks

Tony

jed1950 because the seat has been loose and moving up and down with the valve the seat is also worn down into the cylinder, you will need to replace the valve anyway so I would remove valve from block and grind down the end which is done when you do the valve adjustments, this will shorten the valva then reinstall back with spring in now it will pull down on seat and hold into place while you reinstall the seat, when done you remove old valve then grind and reseat new valve and you are done
