Poor steering on #917288720 Craftsman
| Nick Tessitore |
Have a Craftman Professional Lawn Tractor #917288720. The left front wheel points left and the right front wheel points right. When I turn the wheel either way one points the way i am steering and the other points straight. I changed the steering rods and the spindles but the same problem. I am stumped???

go to sears parts website - enter your model number - pull up the steering section - study the exploded parts diagram - then ck your tractor to see what other items are broken/damaged. May well be something in the steering pinion/gear sector area.

Check sector gear & steering col gears for wear,,may have jumped teeth if badly worn, check steering col support bushing for wear & shoulder bolt, hole in mounting plate & bore in sector gear that shoulder bolt goes thru for wear, check crossmember hole & bushing for same for wear, may be twisting when steering wheel turned & applying pressure to tie rods & spindles, also check spindle sleeves on crossmember for wear.

I would check for bad or worn sector gear, steering shaft gear and loose bushings, any loose brackets.Once you find and either repair or replace part, then remove steering linkage, set tires so they are straight, set steering sector so that steering shaft gear is in the center of the teeth, then hook up linkage and adjust it to fix without moving tires or steering wheel and you will be back on track
