Snapper YT12 transmission repair
| Chris | Hello, I have a YT12 Snaper circa 1990 vintage from a neighbor. I got the engine running and have a few things to do to make it ready to go. The main problem is the transmission: it will not drive when the gear selector is in high or low position. When I jack up the rear end, I can put it in high or low range and the wheels turn in opposite directions. So, the differential works. If I turn the wheels together, they will NOT make the shaft to the driven disk spin, so something inside is slipping. I am thinking one of the gears is stripped or the chain is stretched. Who knows how to repair these? What is the most ocmmon problem with them? I have an IPL but not a repair manual. |
| davey | the chain inside the gearcase has snapped. i seen this lots of times.

| chris | Can I take the cover off the gearcase by just removing the left wheel, axle mount, and dust seal? Or do I have to do a major disassembly? If I can pull the cover and get a replacement chain this should be a couple of hours fix and I have a working mower. My Snapper dealer has a big roll of #50 chain on his shelf with the rivet tools all ready to go, so maybe he fixes these all the time.

| davey | if my memmory is correct, i believe you can but some cases have oil in them and some have grease and theres a gasket btw the gearcase and left plate it mounts on.
