John Deere 212
| chris | I have a john deere 212 riding mower.a new problem has occured.as i try to mow over the grass that i have always mowed. the belt that comes from the pulley on the crankshaft and goes down to the mowing deck pulley, seems to be slowing down.so much that the blades nearly stop spinning.so i replaced the belt. bought a new spring tensioner for it, and still no good.this mower has a kohler engine witha horz. crankshaft.it has two pullies attached to it.one belt goes to the trans in the rear.and the other belt goes to the pulley on the mowing deck.the trans runs fine ,even when the mowing deck belt is apparenty slipping or slowing down.my question is.is there some kind of a clutch inside this pulley that might be wearing out? because these pullies are more than just a pulley on a shaft sticking out of the motor. |
| Joe | If pto for deck manual engage, linkage may be worn/sloppy or clutch lining worn & needs replacement,if electric pto ,clutch may need an adj or replacement.
| bontai Joe | Joe's suggestion sounds right to me. Since the 212 came with both versions of the PTO depending on what year it is, (mechanical with a lever or electric with a toggle switch) we need to know which you have.
| chris | i am not sure what the pto is.but i can say that you have to manually engage the lever for the mowing deck to work.i did check to make sure that the lever was fully engaging the assembly that the linkage is connected to.i did think maybe it was not fully engaging.but it is.
| Joe | From what you say you have a manual engage clutch, check engage linkage that it's not sloppy/worn,after that check running gap between clutch plate & clutch body(clutch disengaged),should be approx .016",however I'm not completely sure on this, just going from memory from past posts, adj linkage to get running clearance, try & see if it fix's problem,if it doesn't,clutch lining/clutch may need replacement, maybe Joe bontai will pickup on this reply,he's the local jd guru & that's his domain,if anybody knows about setting's he will.
| bontai Joe | The PTO is the "power take off". It's the clutch that uses power from the motor to drive attachments like the mower deck, snowblower, etc. Yours is a mechanical PTO since it has a lever that engages the clutch. I don't have access to my service manual for the 200 series today, but I know it can be adjusted for better engagement. Been too long since I've done one to trust my memory.

i found the problem.i pulled the pulley off the crankshaft and discoverred that ther is a band that engages the pullies together.the band of clutch material is worn down very thin and a piece is missing.from calling the jd dealer it seems that the band is not available by itself.you have to purchase the whole clutch.is there some place to just buy that band?or just get the whole assembly?i have sent a pic hopefully it works.

| bontai Joe | The clutch looks to me on Deere's parts site to be an assembly. Please check with your dealer to verify the part number, but I think it's AM134363 at a list price of $150

| chris | bought a used one on ebay last nite for $45.looks like it has excellent lining.thanks for everyone's help.
| dan | you need to tighten your pully clutch back off the inside nut about 1/4 inch and tighten out side nut-if doesnt do it go another 1/4 inch
