Electrical problem: Craftsman tractor with Kohler CV22

Dave I have a Sears Craftsman tractor (model 917.257740) with a Kohler (CV22) engine.

When I turn the ignition I get nothing (no click, no starter). To date, I have replaced the battery, fuse, solenoid, starter, ignition switch, PTO switch, and seat switch. The only thing I haven't replaced is the clutch/brake switch (on back order) but I jumpered the two white wires with a paper clip and STILL no joy. The only thing that works are the headlights. If I jump the two top leads on the solenoid, the starter spins too.

HELP. What am I missing here? I have no more ideas.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Dave

rcbe fair chance that the cl/brake sw is still the culprit. Just jumpering prolly wont get it - some of those switches have jumperproof stuff built in..
Joe If clutch/brake sw has a set of black wires(or another color) on it,try jumping these, white wires may be for ign kill running thru seat & pto sw,looking at wiring harness diag at sears site a connector is shown, leaving harness & going to left fr of tractor with 4 wires in it,this probably goes to clutch/brake sw shown on ground drive diag
Dave Joe: The 4-wire clutch/brake connector had two black wires and two white wires. I jumped both pairs and unfortunately it didn't work -- I still hear and see nothing at all when I turn the ignition switch on. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Dave

Dave RCBE: I was just notified by Sears my clutch/brake switch shipped yesterday.UPS shows I'll get it today so I'll see if that is a problem switch.
rcbe Cross yer fingers :)

M/W, don't forget to follow the whole start routine afeter replacing the switch.. easy to forget pushing in the clutch, turning PTO off, sitting in seat, etc.
Also, re-ck any engine elect hookups that might have been disturbed during the previous troubleshooting - a half-connected plug can look very innocent whilst messing up the whole works.

(Hope I'm jawin about what you've already done..)

Joe While waiting for sw if you haven't received yet or started to replace, try a couple of things 1st(just to keep your mind & hands occupied instead of beating things with them in flustration)with a voltmeter check that you have 12v at battery term of ign sw,after that turn sw to start position & see if you have 12v on start term,if your owners manual has a wiring diag or if it doesen't goto www.searsparts direct.com,enter tractor mod#,at assembly drawing look at electrical,I'm looking at drawing I printed out,at rear rt side of tractor they show an interlock sw(missed this 1st time around),I'm at a loss as to what this sw is for(possibly a sw to prevent backing up with mower engaged)wireing harness has a 4 wire connector going to sw,the zinger is sw 2 wire & there's a 2 wire adapter between sw & wiring harness plug, there may be a diode in this adapter that is bad or sw may be bad/loose,I have no idea if it affects ign kill circuit or starter circuit.
Dave Thanks RCBE. I didn't forget to do all those things. Still no joy.

Joe: The diagram is a little backward since they ran out of room on the drawing I guess. What you saw and described is the clutch/brake plunger switch. I received it today but still no joy.

Unfortunately, at this point I have replaced the battery, solenoid, starter, fuse, ignition switch, pto, seat switch, and clutch/brake switch all to no avail. Anything more is beyond my skills. I think I am forced to call the Sears technician out. I hate to think what that will cost me in addition to what I have already spent.

In any case, thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

Joe Maybe I'm missing something here, looking at assembly drawings at sears site,on ground drive drawing they show an interlock sw(pn#178575) mounted on left frame rail by crossrod for clutch pedal,in elect drawing, they show an interlock sw(pn#104445x)at right rear of tractor,I don't know which sw you ordered & replaced, the thought did occur to me 1 of the sw,s may be a parking brake sw that's bad/loose affecting starting circuit.
Ken DOes anyone have a set of rear rims for this tractoe for a good price. Shipping is so high getting them down this way. would like 6 or 7 inch wide rims

Ken

Donald Grove I need to know the proper way to wire the starting

Michael J. Kantz I have the exact same problem with my 2000 Kohler
25hp V-Twin. I've did the same parts changes u did!. Finally gave up and hooked up a push-button
switch to the starter, so now all I do is turn the key to the on position and push the button and it starts up and runs fine!. Did u ever find out what the problem was?. I'd like to start using the key switch the way it was meant to work!.

a. thomson I have husskeeLTH2042 same problem your not alone
Faith My husband has a Sears Craftsman with a Kohler motor, model:CV155. Whenever you turn the key nothing happens. The starter, spark plug, fuse, and selenoid have all been replaced. Still no luck. Any suggestions, or is it time to give up on Sears for good???!!!
