Sabre 1742hs starts but won't run w/o brake depressed
| Mike Venteicher | I read similar posts which lead me to check the seat safety. I removed and tested by holding it down by hand which only worked inconsistantly. So, I assumed the safety switch was weak and tried bypassing it by directly connecting the black and white wires. Now, it still won't run without the brake pressed and I'm out of ideas. Please help; my lawn is skyrocketing upward. Thanks. Mike. |
| rcbe | some seat safety switches are designed with a "jumper-defeating" feature built-in.. best to replace that switch and see if your problems disappear...

| Joe | Remove jumper & see if that cures problem,if it does, buy a new seat sw & install,if it doesn't problem in other safety sw's,wiring harness or relays(if used in safety circuit)

| bontai Joe | There is a safety switch located somewhere in the brake linkage and you probably have a broken wire leading to or from it. Typically there are 3 switches in a system, one for the brakes so you don't start it without the brakes on, one in the seat so you don't operate the PTO while off the tractor, and one in the tranny, so you don't start it in gear.

| Mike Venteicher | i traced the seat safety back. it was a two-wire seat safety. the black went to the battery ground post, as expected. i followed the white one forward, but couldn't find it's termination. i found the brake pressure switch, and attempted to test it by jumpering the two whites together and the two blacks/blues together (as I found on another online help thread). the engine would turn over continually when i hit the starter, but it would not fire. i called a local john deere service department, and i was instructed that the reverse safety switch is also tied into the same set of start up safeties...? he suggested testing that one next. thoughts? |

| randy | I may have the same problem. If i dump a little gas in the carb my machine starts right up, but salls as soon as the fuel is gone. I have pulled the line off the carb and turned the tractor over, and it pumps fuel out. Could this be a safety switch problem? |
