re use fluid???

RALPH M LERMAYER Just rolled over 200 hours in my L3450 HST. I was prepared for a full fluid change, but reading the manual it appears as through they want me to drain the hydraulic fluid, change the HST hydraulic filter, and put the old fluid back in.

That sounds crazy to me. I have new fluid and was prepared to use it, but the manual says that all I need to change is the filter, but I have to drain the fluid in order to change the filter.

Makes no sense. If the fluid is good (the manual says to replace with new fluid at 400 hours) can I not simply change the filter without draining the fluid? Would that cause air in the lines?

It all seems odd. Fluid is pricey and I don't mind being frugal, but I want this tractor to last way longer than I do. I'd appreciate your help and opinions. Ralph

Rick The book must have a miss print, never reuse
the old fluid. New fluid will be the life of
the machine. Use the old fluid to kill grass
or weeds with.

fuzzy no misprint the new ones(40 series)are like that . spin the old filter off and the new one on as fast as ya can and then top the fluid off. you'll loose only a quart if you are fast
Ralph OK, I can get it done fast, and wanted to add some STP anyway. Do it with hydraulics extended all the way or retracted or does it matter?
charliektractor it doesn't matter--but you'll have to be super fast if you only loose a quart
