buying used BX24

D Fournier Buying a used BX24 with 424 hours on it. Anything I should be aware of with this tractor? Known issues, etc? Anyone have specific problems with one?
Dan

farmm Like anything used, overall condition, service records are the telling tale if it was abused, but 424 hours is not much in the life of the machine. Nothing bad about this machine, just use low range doing work not high range.
Chris I like mine. It likes to get stuck in the swamp out back alot, though.
D Fournier Any limitations besides getting stuck?
D Fournier Service records are recorded by dealer and previous owner recorded all the maintainance he did to it. He was meticulous, and serviced by the book. Overall condition is very good. I took delivery today, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. What is the life expectancy of these tractors in hours, before major enging overhaul? I realize it depends on the use and abuse, but what can I expect for an average?
Dan

farmm You did not mention if was 4WD that will help traction. This is a small tractor with small tires so can only expect so much from it. Longevity with maintenance I would guess about 3000hrs or so. A weekend warrior would take a lifetime to put this amount of hrs on it.
Chris Farmm is correct, it is a light tractor and therefore has limitations. Correct again about the weekend warrior, I've had mine for several yrs and have only 180 hrs on it. Haven't had any issues with it at all (knock on wood). The 4x4 does come in handy with snow removal and pulling logs and such like foolishness. I remain disappointed in the backhoe attachment, it is usful but in a limited capacity. The fel I truly appreciate, I've long since propped my old wheelbarrow up out back and plink at it with a .22. Can't vouch for cold weather starting as mine is kept in a heated barn ( I've said it before- I complain about the horse on a different forum). All in all a good machine for small acre farms.
D Fournier It is 4WD, and rear tires are loaded. Sounds like 5 to 6 hours on a weekend adds up to about 10 years before a re-build. Give or take a year or two. I hope it lasts longer than that. The most work with the FEL and BH will probably get done in the first 2-3 years. After that, it will be smaller projects. Thanks for the input, I feel better about buying it already.
Dan

farmm Check your math, 72 hours a year time 20 years is only 1440 hours.
farmm Sorry messed up the math, You are correct. I used 72 hours a year instead of 312. But 312 is a lot of use.
D Fournier No problem on the math. Not sure what is an average use per year. As I think about it, 312 per year may be high. So maybe I can realisticly get 20 years out of this machine? At that point, I may be to old to get on it anyway. LOL
Dan

D Fournier I understand about limitations due to size. I have trouble in the spring with water running off into the garage due to snow and ice buildup after plowing, and wrong grading. I plan to lower grade all around the garage and direct the runoff at various points. BH will be useful for loosening gravel, the FEL to pile gravel for later re-application. South end of garage is all sand at this point, so will grade and have some more gravel brought it to put over sand where we drive. Should be easy (albiet somewhat slower than larger equipment) with the BX24. Looking forward to playing on it. Then it's on to opening up some of the property for future small farmstand use as a retirement business. I appreciate the feedback. This forum doesn't seem as active as the motorcycle forums I frequent, but it has gotten me the answers I need. I will be on more often from time to time. Thanks again.
Dan

D Fournier I appreciate the help. I hope to be on more often in the future. As I run into problems and learn more about this tractor, maybe I can help someone else with my experiences. Thanks again.
Dan

Jerry I had a L245DT prior to buying a BX2200. The L245DT had over 8000hrs on it before the first engine bolt was ever removed, with the exception of oil drain plug. In my opinion the Kubota is one of the best small tractors on the market today!
