I have a 1993 LX176 that is very hard to start when cold. I have to crank it for a few minutes before it will start. Once it has been started it will continue to start OK. If I preheat the engine with heat lamps it will start right up. Any ideas.

How cold are we talking here? A -50 F Canadian winter cold, or a +35 F Tennessee cold?

What I meant by cold is any time the mower has not been run for over a few hours.

I'm guessing that it is a fuel delivery problem. Possibly fuel pump? Can you disconect the fuel line at the carb and crank the engine over to see if fuel is getting there? But this is strictly a guess on my part. Hopefully someone smarter than me has a more precise answer.

I think Joe is on the right track try, to pour a SMALL ( 15 drops) amount of raw fuel into the cylider thru the spark plug hole then, try to start this engine cold if, it starts good then you know it is fuel you can try the following before replacing the pump. Make certain all you inline fuel filters are clean. Might also replace the spark plugs if they haven't been replaced for quite sometime. Good luck!

check that choke cable is ajusted right. My cable had moved not allowing the full throttle to go to the choke position on the engine.
