| Daniel Tennity | When I try to start my used JD 318, the starter clicks, the lights come on, but the engine won't turn over. I put it into free-wheel to push it our of the yard. I believe I have dis-engaged the free-wheel (I followed the same steps I have in the past to dis-engage it), but I am still able to push the tractor. I have no idea what to do next. I am not sure if something with the free-wheel lever is the problem or if there is something else going on. Can anyone help?

| Dave | Daniel - The "clicking" is a commong problem on some model Deere tractors with a solenoid starter (as opposed to a Bendix starter). To verify, if your 318 has an Onan P218G, it has the solenoid starter. Older 318s with the Onan B43G hav ethe Bendix starter. Deere has a kit for a little over $20 that is a wiring harness and a relay that provides a boost to the starter solenoid and should eliminate the clicking. The part number is AM107421. Regarding the freewheel, the lever is under the rear fender on the right side. There should be a sticker or decal that to push down on the lever to freewheel. Make sure to return the lever to its proper position before starting or attempting to drive the unit. Sometimes you have to "rock" the tractor a bit while someone returns the lever to the up position. - Dave

| Daniel Tennity | My 318 already had that relay wired. I replaced it anyway with no success. What about the starter itself? Also, troughout the season I have found that when I get off the mower while it's still runiing (w/ the PTO disengaged)it sometimes shuts down as if it's not in neutral. Is it possible that a bad neutral switch is to blame? Where does starting the mower fail if it's not in neutral - after the starter engauges or before? Thanks for you original response, hopefully you can still help me out. - Dan
