GT245 lemon?

Carol Skalsky
We bought a brand spanking new GT 245 On April 14 this year. After 17.5 hours running (May), it started running rough, lost power, and blew black smoke. The dealer came out and got it, but "found" that the plugs were fouled, that there was gas fouled oil, and that the filter was dirty (my husband had just cleaned the filter). They also adjusted the factory choke. They chalked it up to "bad gas" and told us to let them know if it happens again.

After 3 hours of mowing...it happened again. This time it had to wait until today for my husband was out of town. Sure enough, the plugs were fouled. Their shop notes say now that they changed the plugs, cleaned the carboureter, had found dirt in the gas, and it runs just fine. They suggest we are not "running it at full throttle with pto engaged, causing the gas to incompletely burn."

How do we get our money back or get them to fix the problem? We're not going to play this game of we're not babying the thing enough. We played that game with a craftsman chainsaw until we took it back for a quality Stihl.

Carol

Dave Carol - You should run at full throttle. Otherwise, you will run the risk of fouling the plugs and the oil. Also, how old is the gas you are running? If it's more than 30 days old, especially if the temps are damp or hot, the fuel can begin to go stale. This causes some problems with combustion. You might want to consider using fuel stabilizer if that's the case.

Since you are long past the 30 return policy for John Deere, getting your money back is not likely. - Dave

carol
Hi...

We are running at full throttle...

My husband went down in person and they are getting a new carbeurator. The mechanic thinks this will just be a recurring problem otherwise. The gas was fresh as well.

Carol

bontai Joe I hope the carb replacement solves your tractor's problem. I know it can be very frustrating to have invested a significant amount of money into a tractor that isn't working correctly, but keep after the dealer to make it work right, it is still under warantee. And once fixed, hopefully this experience will fade away after 10 to 20 years of trouble free operation. I have a truck with 231,000 miles on it that I had lots of problems with the first 5 months I had it, but once fixed has become one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I guess I'm saying hang in there a little while longer.
Coppoc Hello, very interested in your story. Sounds identical to mine down to the date purchased and hours at which problems developed. I purchased the GX335. It has a 20 hp Kawasaki engine. Is that what your tractor has? My dealer has done the carborator replacement. It began the same symptoms, running rich, belching black smoke, no power, etc after about 5 hours of operation after replacement. Did your symptoms develop slowly? My dealer says he may put in a new engine. My confidence is low that this will fix the problem. Guess they could do this about every 15 hours of operation. Keep me posted.
Coppoc Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The dealer gave me a loner. Same exact mower, GX335. I think it is starting the same thing. Almost 21 hours on it.
carol
Hello...yes...we have the 20 hp kawasaki..

Will keep you posted. Keep us posted as well.

Carol

carol UPDATE...

We got our mower back Saturday and ran it for 2 hours...but had to stop because of rain.

now here's the kicker (SCREAM hardly contained).

I just got a call from the dealer's business office a few minutes ago....wanting to know when we were going to PAY $500 for the service and carb replacement. (SHRIEK!) I have a message into my husband AND our lawyer!!!!

THEY ARE SO TOAST!!!

PK Riverside in Norman Oklahoma...STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!!

Carol

bontai Joe Your tractor has still gotta be under warantee, so it IS the dealer's responcibility to fix it. I've checked around and it does not seem like this problem is wide spread, although you and another person here have reported the same defect. Without seeing the machines, I can only guess that there were a few defective carborators used and you guys were unlucky to get one. I do sincerelyt hope that the dealer steps up and makes it right either by correctly fixing the problem, or replacing your machine's engine. I knowe you may not believe me, but the Deere GT series of tractors are very good machines, and most folks have little or no problems with them. I have already "chatted" with someone that has over 200 hours on the same machine and it has been trouble free. I sincerely wish you the best of luck in getting this properly fixed.
carol Hi Joe...

Well, the service mgr called and said they were ready to send back our mower to us....then I informed him they already had. Laugh laugh, he said he must've slipped it through and he will get the paperwork corrected right away to reflect warranty. I then told him about the other guy on the list that had a similar problem, only the carb replacement didn't help him. Mr. service mgr. wants me to find out the serial no. of that one's engine...so when he gets his back from the shop...he'll be able to pass that along...

What we're fed up with is the joe smooth salesman pitch that suggests it's our fault (but in oh such a nice way), but when they sense our frustration they back off. Turns out he was familiar to my husband....and that's because my husband had dealt with him when the guy worked for city chevrolet. Hopefully we have shown enough knowledge and attitude that we won't be questioned/soft soaped again. None of this should be happening with only 22 hours on the tractor...but when the implication is that it's the customer's fault...that's just too hard to take.

Hopefully joe smooth salesman realizes just how close we were into making them take it back and ending our business relationship. It was just too much this second time for them to expect us to let them just change plugs and clean the carboretor and say...see all better...until next time. The only reason they changed the carboretor is because my husband appeared in person and was there when the mechanic told the service mgr that it was just going to keep recurring. The fact that they were going to leave it at changing the plugs (they were only black and not really fouled...so cleanable) had we not protested, still frosts my flakes.

Unfortunately, if and when this gets fixed for good, as this gets more hours on it and if other things do occur in the warranty period, we get the feeling it will be battle after battle with this shop.

Carol

Coppoc Ok, I got my GX335 back and they said they re-jetted the carb. Made it run leaner. They said it was running too rich which eventually fouled the plugs, which made it run rough, lose power, and belch black smoke. They put a few hours on it and I've run it a little, probably a total of 8-9 hours. So far so good. Running as good or better than it ever has.
Serial Numbers
Mower MOG335E121279
Engine 3KAXS.6752CA
Will keep you posted of there are any changes.

bontai Joe I'm very glad to hear it is running good for you. I wish you many trouble free years with your tractor.
carol Thanks for the information.

We ran ours for 2 hours after the new carboretor. My husband ran it for 2 1/2 hours more yesterday (after a week of rain), and checked the plugs and they are black. He cleaned them up and is interested in seeing what they will look like after a bit more mowing. It is sounding like these carboretors are factory set to run too rich. We hope yours runs better with the new jets. I am curious...have you looked at your plugs after 9 hours or so?

Carol

Coppoc The plugs have some black at the base near the threads. Around the gap they are mosly clean with a slight color, which I understand is desirable. Still running fine.
Coppoc That was supposed to be a tan color. Don't know how I left that out.
Carol
Well, sadly that is not the case with ours. after three hours on new plugs, the entire plug head(s) were black with carbon. My husband cleaned them, they were a nice, tannish color on the electrodes. After another hour and a half of operation, they are black with carbon again.

Sounds like ours is running rich and they are going to have to deal with it. We will suggest they do the carboretor jets like they did yours (as indicative of a factory design flaw).

bontai Joe Carol,
I am very sad to hear of your continuing problem. I can only suggest that you continue to push the dealer to make it right. You may not believe me at this point, but this tractor is really a good machine and I only hope yours gets fixed so that you can finally appreciate it. I've gone so far as to ask on other forums if there are other owners with similar problems in hopes of finding out some info for you as to a possible factory directive, or possible recall, etc. I have not heard anything as of yet. If I do, I will pass along any info I get to you folks.

Carol
After 4 hours of mowing after the last shop visit (new carburetor), even with cleaning the plugs, it started running rough again. He could clean the plugs but it gets to the point where the carbon build up in the rest makes it run rough. They are picking it up tomorrow and are going to re-jet the carburetor. The only problem they say is that our model is air-cooled, so they are afraid it may run hot....although I just looked and Coppoc's gx 335 is also air-cooled...the gx series gets into water cooled in model 345 on up....
They also say they have had problems with some of this series running lean more often than running rich...

Unfortunately, the dealer says they do not have a loaner, so we are once again mowerless. We have yet to have the thing mow all 3 3/4 mowable acres without a hitch. When it does work...it works very well and leaves the lawn carpet-like. We hope this last fix will take care of it and hope they refund us the pickup/delivery fee on the first warranty service.

Carol
Well, here it is Friday afternoon...my husband is outside dealing with the delivery guy...I called the general manager. It is everything I can do to not scream.

The delivery guy is outside...said they did NOT rejet the carburetor. The invoice said they "checked the filter and it's full of oil." Cleaned it, replaced plugs, works fine...

In other words, once again, they are claiming OPERATOR FAULT.

You know what? That is garbage as my husband babied the thing every two hours cleaning the plugs. WHAT ABOUT "RUNNING TO RICH" CAN'T THEY UNDERSTAND????!!!!

I told them I want my money back, that the equipment is only as good as the service department!!! While the mower is fixable and could probably be a great machine once they fix the DEFECT, I don't want to deal with these crooks/incompetents, whichever applies, in the service department.

TOO MUCH MONEY TO PUT UP WITH THIS!!

ARGHGHGH! HELP!

bontai Joe I can really understand your frustration. I hope you can take a deep breath, calm down a little, and then cooly evaluate what your options are. I think at this point, you definitely could try going up the food chain at Deere, and express your problem with your tractor AND your dealer and insisting that the problem be corrected with your carborator. Another approach would be insisting on a new machine, and depending on which stste you are in, you might be covered by the same lemon laws that cover cars. And a refund to be used toward a different color tractor from a different dealer is another choice. These need to be discussed first with your husband and then once you have both decided, then calmly proceed with your decision. I'm very sad that the GT245 has given you so many problems and Even though I have no vested interest in Deere selling tractors (I'm not in the business) I hope you know that this is not how Deere usually does business or manufacture equipment.
carol Well, they have it now and have changed the coil pack on the right side. It now runs *equally* on both sides, but they're not sure they are satisfied with the results as they say they haven't run it long enough to burn off the carbon. A kind reader wrote me privately and worked with his dealer and John Deere and John Deere has put out a Service Bulletin:
03-11-30-6. He said it details our issues and it
gives the corrective action. The issue is the vent tube, according to the bulletin.

He also told me his dealer had another GT245 with the exact issues as ours. It had 16 hours when it quit.

Now the deal is that I mentioned to our service dept. the vent tube thing last week (before a service bulletin came out)and our dealer didn't understand why it would be an issue and said they would try to find out. Well, apparently, without calling Deere, they visually inspected the vent tube and didn't see a restriction. I am not sure what they are to look for, and they can't tell me exactly *why* it would be a problem, so it looks like they need to research it and get the service bulletin....lets hope they do...

I did also contact the general manager so hopefully he is on it.

CArol

Coppoc Carol, glad I didn't have to deal with your dealer. Ours was great. Our tractor is now at 48 hours and running strong. Hasn't missed a beat. Hope the re-jetting solves your engine problem. Let us know.
Carol Welllllll......

They won't rejet it. I keep getting this story that you are up in Iowa and our summers here in Oklahoma are just too hot in comparison and that factory set fuel mix is required to cool the engine and blah blah...and his philosophy is that he'd rather have it burn too rich than too lean and "burn up the engine."

He is adamant that our issue was a bad coil pack on the right causing uneven firing that eventually caused the left to foul to compensate and that only until now we've been checking the plugs at the "right time" after full load instead of before...

I am not convinced a "bad" coil pack is going to manifest itself in "uneven plug load," maybe someone can enlighten me and tell me what they think of the diagnosis of our symptoms in relation to a bad coil pack (I mean don't they just commonly cut out and not just "weaken" the spark??)...Anyway...there was no mention of ohmmeter readings and my husband will be SURE to ask what those were tomorrow....

All I know is that after 4-5 hours the thing starts running rough and so far they've tested it only 2. They want to send it home tomorrow although we don't have tall grass really to mow for that many hours since we've been without rain. We're leaving town for a month so it just feels like yet another delay in getting this problem taken care of...and no....when pressed, he admitted they did not feel the need to ask John Deere to help troubleshoot our problem.

Carol

carol
Well so far so good. They replaced the carburetor on the 2nd shop visit, but it appears the right coil pack was bad as well. Since the coil pack was replaced this last time, it has run so far 10 hours with no issues yet....which is a record since the first failure after the initial 17.

Carol

bontai Joe I truely hope this fades away as a bad memory and you can settle down to 20 or 30 years of pleasant grass cutting.
carol
We're back.

We've been gone a month now to NJ for my husband's work. I am driving back (still en route) but my husband flew back and attempted to mow the lawn this weekend...

Yes.....the thing almost finished, but then died. Fouled right plug..the side they replaced the coil pack. So essentially the lawn has been mowed 1 1/2 times since the last fix before this breakdown.

As we told the general manager at the dealer....one more strike...they're out.

It's going back folks. Now if they don't take it back and give us our money back....we are making a hobby out of that dealer.... Suing the hell out of them and making sure John Deere has a very black eye..

Why aren't they recalling these mowers???!!!!!

Carol

carol
Hmmm...maybe they're monitoring this board?

The dealer is NOT picking up this mower and if they've been reading this forum it's probably because they're afraid.

Anyhow...the "next thing they want to try" is that "John Deere has come up with a different air filter" that will "accomplish the same thing as rejetting the carburetor" by "mixing more air in with the fuel." That filter they're running out to the house. I guess as far as carbon buildup they are thinking that will "burn off."

The "next thing after that is changing the engine." Of course, he suggested because we were gone a month that the grass was "tall." Yup...gotta throw in that hint of customer negligence just to maintain their customer "service" M.O. Oh, that and that he "forgot" to call my husband back to tell him they weren't picking it up. (they "forgot" to call and update us on each of the 5 service calls...just showing up with the mower and a bill...and yes...they've tried to bill us).

How many want to wager that they're just buying time this mowing season to get us out of their face?

Carol

bontai Joe I'm sorry for not checking in on you sooner. This thread got buried pretty far down. I am very sad to hear that you are still having problems. At this point, especially since the dealer seems less than co-operative, I have to agree in getting your money back and trying something else with a different brand motor. Most of the folks I can get feed back from love these machines, so I don't have an answer on your problem, unless it was built real close to closing time on a Friday. I was kinda hoping all was well. What dealer are you using? And have you checked with any other dealers or Deere corporate?
carol Hi,

The dealer, P & K equipment in Norman, OK, said that Deere will not buy back any tractor past the 30 day period, and that the owner will not give us our money back except for what they would pay for a tractor with 55 hours on it. The owner claimed too much time had passed (4 months). Note that it has been in 5 times and twice during that period my husband had to travel for work and be gone for a month, so we didn't get to run the thing intensively between repairs.

They "offered" to get us into a different tractor with different motor at their cost (less commission and markup), but unless we took a downgrade, they would NOT let us trade for zero cash. In other words, if we went to a gx series (they don't change engines until the 345), they would give it to us at their cost, but NOT credit the full amount that we paid on the GT245 but a depreciated amount. In other words, our 245 was only good for $4300 although we paid close to 5500 for everything. I was livid because I was not going to write out another check. I told him our patience and giving them an opportunity to make things right was the ONLY reason why there were 55 hours on it and 4 months after we bought it. Had I known this was not going to get resoved, they'd have had the tractor back after 17.5 hours and 32 days. I told him we were ripped off. He finally agreed to give us another brand new GT245 with zero hours on it, but only if we keep the same mower deck. This is the minimum we would accept because we were not willing to get a new engine in our other one, run it for 55 more hours only to be told there were too many hours on it and it would be depreciated again. We insisted on zero hours so as to set the depreciation clock back. We don't have faith in these engines, not knowing if the problems were to do a design flaw or a TGIF product. They claim we're the only ones having the problem at that dealer, and yet can't explain why Deere has technical bulletins out. The deal is that deere admits the tube to the right cylinder is farther than the left, so that might explain the rich mixture going to the right cylinder (it's the right side that keeps fouling).

Anyhow, according to the general manager, he wants us to run the heck out of the mower this month and put the hours on it (if it's a design flaw, it will fail after 15-20) and if it messes up supposedly, we will be within a new 30 day john deere money-back period and we should get all our money back (how much you want to bet they'll depreciate the mower deck?). They're more interested in not losing money than not losing customers.

We're not completely happy at all, but at least it's working toward the end of this nightmare. If it works, fine, chalk it up to TGIF manufacturing. If not, hopefully there won't be new obstacles to getting our money back. I just was not willing to accept them throwing in an engine and putting more hours on the old one, since I know they were going to burn us for every hour put on it if the new engine had the same problems.

The other disturbing thing is that their mechanic finds an extraordinary number of cases of "debris in the gas." The manager would have me believe that his typical customer uses rusty gas cans. I told him we were questioned ourselves and told them we used plastic gas cans, and that they accused us having particles in the gas in the past. How many of these GT245s are having the same problems and the customers are being led into believing it's their fault (dirty gas?).

bontai Joe Thanks for the update. I real sorry that there was not much good news. When this thread hits page 13, it will drop of the forum into a plie of electrons on somebody's floor. I've contacted some other folks that might know more than me (there are lots of those) to see if I can get any more info for you. I don't work for any dealer (did work at a Deere dealership back in the 1970s), but as a big fan and owner of 3 Deere tractors, I hate to see one not work right.
Carol Hi,

Thanks Joe. They did bring us out the other GT245 so we're going to be putting the hours on it in order to put it to the test. If it acts up like the other one, I'll just start a new thread so people having problems can find it.

Carol

bontai Joe Carol,
The info in this thread might be of interest to you:
http://www.ssbtractor.com/wwwboard/view_all.cgi?bd=jd&msg=7103

The person there found a number on Deere's website and got some help on their repair bill.

Part Time Carol, I also have a 2004 GX335 w/ the 20hp kawasaki engine and after reading your thread I went out to check my plugs they also have some dry carbon build up on them, I haven't expierenced the symptons or problems that you have but do believe your dealer along w/ john deere should make your GT245 perform the way it was designed to I truly hope this situation get's resolved for you in a positve and expediant manner you have suffered enough already.

Please inform us how the Gt is performing lately and what exactly resolved the problem

Jim Brahn i work at a toro dealership and understand your frustration. Your dealer has not done his duty to put the customer first. One thing you must understand is that these "bad gas" problems are everywhere. I bet 85% of anything that comes in my shop is a fuel related problem. I save the gas to show the customer. Your problem is not a bad gas problem but it is possible to have rust or dirt in it even though you are using plastic cans. I have seen it in my shop. I have fueled up a brand new machine with fresh gas only to have to drain it out because it wouldn't start. Had water in it right from the pump at a very busy gas station! As far as suing the dealer you are just one of the millions of people who are ruining this country by being sue happy! I wish I could sue people for stuff that has happened to me over the years but that's ridiculous. I do hope your problem is fixed. if not, get rid of that green thing and get a toro.
carol We got our money back.

As far as suing a dealer who has taken someone's money in exchange for a dead piece of new equipment...it is totally justified to expect a refund particularly with the situation similar to min and not to be confused with a sue happy state. For a dealer to do otherwise is frankly, theft. The courts are there for a purpose (consumer protection) and it is ridiculous to insinuate that this situation didn't warrant it if it had not been made right. It's called the federal lemon law. What is ruining the country is bad work ethic, and dishonesty (on both sides which ecompasses frivolous suers as well as bilkers).

Jim B Kawasaki 20 HP. This engine is a proven performer overall. Although your dealer did try and rip you off. For anyone to assume that all there products are problem free are living in a fantasy world. In one of your statements you motioned that the Air filter was soaked with oil and the right side cylinder was fouling first or worst.
This is caused by a bad coil pack, a blown head gasket or bad compression rings.
If the coil pack is bad you will not burn the gas completely thus fouling plugs.
The blown head gasket will allow compressed gasses to inter the crank case and over pressurize it witch will push oil into the crank case vent that relives itself into the right hand side of the air filter. The air filter will be clogged with oil and not allow air to flow and cause your engine to run rich with the end result of Fouled plugs. Just so you know. Thank you.

debbie Purchased GT245 March 05. After about 7 hrs started to surge after mowing. Called dealer & was told to bring over. This was a Sat. Tuesday they called said tractor ready. They cleaned the jets in carb. Took home mowed nexted weekend started all over again. Took it back again this time they replaced the carb. No problems since. I was told they try to re jet first & if it comes back they replace the carb. This was all done under warranty. They also said there was dirt in gas. Since that time I bought a funnel that has a real fine screen to filter gas putting into tank. You should see some of the dirt I'm getting. I have changed the fuel filter twice. I was told the carb was set to meet emmissions & there isn't any adjustments on it. Hope it runs fine for it's 2nd season of mowing. Love the tractor.
bcbob I've got a Kawasaki Mule that I had a lot of plug problems with. They were wet and fouled. They finally told me that Kawasaki had been using very hard rings that hadn't sealed. $1000
later. It's running great now.

Tom Well it seems that my GT 245 with just under 60 hours has this problem. It has run fine since new in July 04. I did a complete tuneup on it prior to the first cut in the spring and it ran great until early June. It started with the black exhaust smoke and missing and such. The plugs were all carboned up. I replaced the air filter again, new plugs and a new fuel filter and it ran great for a couple more mowings. Well Thursday night as I was finishing up mowing out back it started acting up again. Today I went to a local JD dealer and spoke with one of the mechanics who was more that helpful. His suggestion was to get the engine serial number off the side of the engine and get a new air filter for that serial number. He also said that he has rejetted many of these Kawasaki 20 hp engines to stop this rich condition. So tonight I pulled the carb off and took the jets out of it. I'm going to order the new jets on Monday as well as the air filter. He also mentioned that playing with the idle screws may help it run cleaner as well.

I'll let you know how I make out.

ken I bought one in 2003 or 04 and had the same problem. After a new engine and a new carb. The factory sent me a letter saying they had put the wrong air filter on it at the factory. They have two filters that look the same but one is for an internal venting and the other is for external venting. The one you want is for external venting. Hope that helps.
joel dyar carol ihave had the same problem and found out that kawasaki put the wrong air filter on some of the gt245 you need part # m150403 filter and m140295 or kit # lg250. This fixed my mower.
Tom B GX 335 bought used 10 weeks ago: ran fine until last week (2-acre lawn all summer). Not showing signs of running extremely rich but could smell gas after shutting it down. Just ran rough and stalled out at low rpm's. Changed plugs, fuel filter, cleaned carb (some dirt) - no change. Just checked filter after reading this forum and found wrong air filter was installed (still bright white though). Externally vented model with internal type filter.
Tom B Changed filter to proper type and there's no difference. Showed a mechanic the old plugs and he say's it's definitely running lean because of the white colored electrode. Replace worn gas line from filter to fuel pump because it was cracked but it didn't make a difference. Going to change the fuel line from the filter back to the tank. Checked for spark and saw a yellow spark. Was told it should be blue so I'm gonna ohm out the coils. Anybody got any idea what kind of ohm reading I should have? Also thinking that it might be sucking air from the carb gaskets so I'll probably change them also. I'm runnin outta things to change!
Tom B Should I be able to blow air from the copper vent tube - into the carb?

TomB ok, Mr. Personality @ the JD place talked to his mechanic and said that the 'externally vented' carb is obsolete an I'll need to buy an 'internally vented' replacement for $500! I passed and decided to tear the carb apart one more time (4-times total - a little more throurough each time). This time I discovered a blockage in one of the prorts, blew it out with some carb cleaner, then put it back together again. Runs perfect!
