Deere 445 Surging

Aron I have a 1997 445 with 400 hours on the meter. It has been a great machine until the last time I used it. After about 45 minutes of mowing, it started to surge really bad, to the point where I couldn't mow any more. I added fuel dryer and replaced the fuel filter, same results. I then siphoned the fuel out and replaced with fresh from a different store (in case of water). Same results. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Aron

Aron I figured it out last night. There is a small piece of rubber hose that connects the pump to the steel line going out of the tank. That rubber hose had a split in it. Replaced and it works great!
Phil I have the same trouble. Where does the rubber hose go to? The fuel tank?
Greg Take Aron's advice. It worked! Our 1998 445's rubber hose was cracked too. To get to the fuel pump, remove the six 10mm bolts (two under the seats, four connecting to the foot rest spots) that hold the rear body piece on. Lift off the rear body piece (remembering to remove the brake light fixtures FIRST, and disconnect the seat safety switch -- slide the seat safety switch cable through the hole in the bottom of the body piece), and place it aside (the seat will remain attached). Unscrew the fuel pump's retention ring (big black threaded disc), and then lift the fuel pump out of the tank. Connected between the fuel pump and tank is a rubber hose with a split in it. Replace that hose. Replace all parts in the reverse order of removal (be careful not to crush the light bulbs/fixtures, and remember to carefully slip the safety switch and cord back through the hole it was in originally). Make sure the light bulbs/fixtures are secure, as well as the safety switch.

Start the lawntractor.

Mow. :)

Chris Mullin Thanks Aron and Greg! After trouble shooting for days, I came accross your advise and now am able to plow the snow from our drive way. Great instructions on replacing the hose. Who whould have thought that a 1.5 inch hose hidden in the gas tank and masked by the fuel pump (with a 1/8 inch hole) would have rendered the 22hp tractor useless. I will now always check here when trouble shooting. Thanks again guys!

Joe Thompson I had the same surging problem. Replacing the cracked fuel line fixed it.
Chuck Falter Same problem, same fix. Almost took it to the JD dealer. Wonder what that would have cost. Priced a fuel pump, before finding this message board, the part alone was $350. You guys saved me a ton of $. Thanks.
Nick I have this problem now. Will try this fix tonight.
Thanks for posting this.

Nick Same issue, hose was fine but upper clamp was not tight enough to hold the pressure. Tightened the clamp and works great now.
Thanks again.

MATT I am having the same problem. replaced the coils, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, fixed the cracked fuel line on the pump and it still surges after about 15 minutes and it does it more if its warmer out. last time I mowed it was 90 degrees and humid and it acted up about 8 times in 2 hours. the code flashing was 2 long and 1 short. machine has 285 hours and is a 2001. what else could it be?
