John Deere 316 PTO clutch

paul I have a John deere 316 lawn mower...The PTO cluch will not stay on....I have tried the battery..ajdusting the clutch..a new switch..a new voltage reg...and nothing...it seems to be something ele..the battery light stays on and will not go off...if by some chance it does flicker off then the deck will run ...Please help
Dave Paul - The fact the battery light stays on, indicates the voltage is low. Either the voltage regulator, stator, or time delay module (if it's an Onan powered 316) could be at fault.

At full throttle, check the voltage at the battery. It should be up over 13.5 volts (14.5 would be better). If not, I would check the voltage coming off the regulator/rectifier, again at full throttle. You should get 14+ volts DC. There should also be two leads at the regulator that come from the stator. These two leads should provide at least 28 volts AC (that's right AC).

If you locate the problem as the regulator or the stator, you'll need to replace the proper components. Should they both check O.K., the time delay module may be defective (big bucks). If the problem with the clutch continues, it's possible the clutch itself is weak and needs replacment. - Dave

RANDY WHERE IS THE STATOR LOCATED ON THE 316 WITH THE 16 HP ONAN??? I'M WORKING ON AN OLD 110 AND THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE FLY WHEEL, IS THE ONAN THAT WAY ALSO??? THANKS RANDY
