John Deere LA115 - Carburetor Adjustment

Bill Denlinger I own an LA115 that runs fairly well but occasionally back-fires when I shut it off. Also, when not under a load (cutting grass for example) the engine RPM isn't steady regardless of the position of the throttle. I suspect that it is running a bit rich but the manual does not provide guidance on how to make any adjustments (idle or full run) and when I contacted John Deere they indicated that only a service rep can do the adjustment. I am inquiring to find out if anyone has had success adjusting the carb on the Briggs engine for the LA 115.
