JD 302A industrial loader tractor

Dick Warren I have a JD 302A which has lost its hydralics. I've had this tractor since 1993 and it has always performed just fine. It is a 3-cyl diesel with a 3-pt hitch and about a 73-75 model year. The 302A is the industrial, which is close to either the 1010 or 1020 farm version.

The first hydralics that quit were the transmission or moving. I had been bush-hogging some grass and it got slower and slower and finally wouldn't move. The power steering and the 3-pt was still working as I had my mower attached. I towed it home and parked it. The next day I tried to move it but by now, all the hydralics were gone. No power steering, no 3-pt hitch, (the mower had falled to the ground). I had just changed the two hydralic filters under the tractor and put in some new oil two weeks prior.

I remember that several weeks prior to changing the filters, when I was again bush-hogging some grass, it was having trouble moving forward but seemed to be okay in reverse. That was why I changed the two filters.

Does anyone have any ideas? My JD dealer told me it could be the shaft in the hyd pump within the transmission that broke or something within the hydralic pump in front of the engine. JD would not look at it for much less then $3,500-$5,000. Way too much for my pocket book. I am a good home mechcanic and have all the tools and equipment to disassemble it but sure would appreciate some input on were the problem might be, the hydralic pump in the transmission or the one in front of the engine. Regards, Dick Warren

dave you need to get some hydraulic pressure gauges and taake some test pressures. it could be a crack in the suction line to the pump. fix ALL hydraulic leaks first. especialy any leaks that drip only when engine is not running. does the oil look milky? if it is its a leak on the suction side of the hydraulic pump
John Mechanic I'll bet ya' the PTO clutch is out!
It drives the charge pump in the transmission that feeds the steering, brakes, then the main hydraulic pump.
