LX 280 ignition module issues

Bruce Hoffmann I have a JD LX280 lawn tractor. A few weeks ago, the blades kept stopping while mowing. I could cycle the PTO switch and the blades would start, but stop again after moving about 10 feet.
I pulled the tractor up to the house and smelled something burning. I opened up the hood and saw smoke coming from a capacitor on the ignition module. I bought a replacement for $89 and it blew again.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot and repair this issue would be greatly appreciated. My grass is getting quite high and it needs some mowing.

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce Hoffmann Still no resoluion on this issue, but now believe it may be caused by the voltage regulator. I pulled the battery to verify and found 4 cells low on water, so I added and charged. A load test on the battery showed the battery was in working order.
I jumped the tractor and took voltage readings off the stator and got 35.7VAC at full throttle. The reading at the battery at full throttle was 20.9VDC. Could this be smoking the ignition control module? I'd like to fully understand the issue before I go out and buy another 90 dollar ignition module only to have it go up in smoke. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Bruce
