John Deere 318 Battery
| Paul | In the last three years I have gone through 2 batteries. I check the water levels regularly and the battery light does not come on during operation. After less than a year of use, the tractor will run fine, but then the battery will not turn over the starter after sitting about a week. I will use a charger to activate and start. Have noticed that there is a lot of battery corrosion around the batteries - but not on the terminals but mainly along the base. I am wondering if vibration from the tractor could be to blame? Thanks. |
| Dave | Paul - Vibration does not help. What size battery do you have in your 318? Is it spec'd properly for the application? I've seen people put a little lawn and garden tractor battery in their 318s, and it just won't last. Also, don't know if you live in a cold climate during winter, but if you do, you may want to consider using a battery tender to keep the battery charged. A weak battery does not do well in cold climates, nor during periods of non-use. Keep the connections clean, at the battery, ground and starter. The original battery in my 318 lasted for over ten years. It was a fluke I'm sure. - Dave

| Paul | It is a john deere battery that is spec'd for the 318. I live in MN, however, the tractor is stored in a heated garage. |
| Dave | Paul - I'd look at cleaning the terminals and other contacts. Make sure the battery is kept on a trickle charger when not used for extended periods. The other issue can be how the battery was initially charged when new. If not properly charged out of the box, it will not take a charge as well, nor maintain the charge for as long. I had that issue with a JD Battery. The thing went south within a year. Took it back to the dealer, they said they had a rash of them that were bad and found out the owner's kid was not prepping them properly. - Dave

| Daryl | You mentioned that you have abnormal corrosion in the bottom of the battery box. This leads me to suspect battery overcharging. Have you had to add battery fluid more often than what seems normal? The voltage output should be checked with the engine running at full throttle & should read no more than 14 volts. If it does, there are a few things you can do. The best but more expensive way is to replace charging mogule. Another way is to run your lights to absorb the excess amps. I have even added more lights to do the job. Good luck |
