Sale price for John Deere 755
| Daryn Thorpe | I have a JD 755 with a 3 cyl yanmar diesel, the engine blew and it is way out of my budget to rebuil ($5000) or replace with a new engine ($4,200) so I wondering what I should sell it for It has a loader, duelly turf tires, posi loc 4wd, and hydrostatic transmission. Would $2000 be too much or too little? There is one of the same year and same features except tires that is selling for $7,900. Thanks for your help! |
| bontai Joe | Not knowing the hours on this machine and its overall condition except for the blown motor, I'd say $2000 would be reasonably fair, as the loader has to be worth close to that if in working order and not too bent up.

| Dale G. Basgall | Daryn : We have a F935 that the deck is rotted through, the engine runs great and has never given us a problem and it is a 3cylinder engine. It's to bad that a good tractor has to be sold for scrap, is it an option to try to find a used engine with the same numbers on it , there are all kinds of machines that have those on them. How did the failure happen was it a broken piece of metal internally or a shortage of engine oil to something really costly to repair ? Dale G. Basgall |
| bontai Joe | I have had a chance to think about this one. Was the $5000 repair quote from your Deere dealer? Have you explored the possibility of getting an independant shop to repair it? What are the nature of the repairs, because I am thinking $5000 buys a LOT of parts? What does the rest of the tractor look like? Has it got huge amounts of hours and so worn out it's not worth fixing? Or is it a nice condition low hour machine that just happened to have the motor grenade on you?

| Daryn Thorpe | Yes the price quote was from a dealer, but that was for a rebuild, lots of labor charges, they recommended I get a crate motor $2,800 and add the remaining components and add labor it would be $4,200 for all new. The tractor is not perfect it was used to mow around a lagoon for a paper mill side hilling at a 30 degree angle, thus the need for duelly tires, and the smaller tractor. I can't remember the exact hours, but I think somwhere around 2800, it is around 25 years old. Loader is in good shape, hydraulic fluid is clear, but I was haveing some radiator issues, so I would have to let it cool down every couple hours, then a loud pop later it was done. I rebuilt the top end,but exhaust was blowing by the rings. At this point due to the lack of adiquate tractor for where I use it the Mill is going with another contractor, so I don't think it would be wise to fix a tractor I can't use. Thank you again for the help. With this added info is $2000 still a decent price to sell it for? Daryn |
| Dale G. Basgall | Daryn : From a mechanical perspective the tractor is in a certain weight and horsepower line. What I do is find out the replacement cost of that size tractor in todays standards. Then I take the approximate tangible value of the machine in question "if" it was in running condition and then also what percentage of life is left in it. For instance if your 755 was running fine and it had 2800 hours on it, you could figure it has seen 90% of it's efficient days and the machine could not be pushed really hard like a new one or it will break something. Now if a person was to buy it to operate light duty it may last another 25 years. However a tractor that size runs around 14k with no attachments, meaning it's worth around 5k running good with no broken parts. You never put the amount in tangible value of the equipment into the repairs of any equipment. I think your really close on your price of 2k. It's just hard to spend time and money into a peice of equipment when in reality after the repairs are done it has cost you the price of that tractor in the repairs. Dale G. Basgall |
| bontai Joe | Ahhh, now knowing that this machine was often operated at a 30 degree angle explains a lot about why the motor went bad. Yeah, I still think the loader alone would make your tractor worth your $2000 asking price. If you wanted to go through the effort of dismantling it, you could probably part it out for more, you know, sell the wheels, the axles, the tranny, the loader, the hood etc, but that represents a fair amount of work, time and effort to sell all the parts.
