Scotts 1642 won't start - only a single click!
| Foligno | Hello, I have a Scotts 1642. Its a 2000 I think - or close. It has been pretty reliable until yesterday. I stopped mowing halfway through the job to get a refreshment and now it will not start. I get one click each time I turn the key. The click is coming from the engine- seems like it is near where the fuel line is at the front of the engine, but its hard to say. Is that maybe a fuel filter? The starter is on the other side of the engine and doesnt seem to be clicking. I believe the solenoid is under the seat and also is not clicking. I charged the battery (it says its now full) and and cleaned/tightened all connections. Any ideas are greatly appreciated but note that if you want me to bypass something to test, Im somewhat a newbie to this kind of thing. thanks so much! |
| bontai Joe | Have you tried starting it with the battery charger still attached?
|
| foligno | I have tried boosting it with jumper cables to the battery with no difference
|
| foligno | ok, so I used a booster cable from my car and bypassed the solenoid - I hooked the cable first to the starter, then to the positive battery terminal. Some sparking, but the engine cranked. It wasnt doing that before. Is it safe to say that I probably need a new solenoid? Also, I tried to make the unit start this way, but it wouldnt - it just cranked. Is that normal when you jump this or am I looking at a new issue? |
| Marc | I have the same mower with the same issues. Took it in the shop and they replaced the solenoid. Got the unit back mowed the yard and it did the same thing. Its now back in the shop and of course it starts every time. I wonder if its the ignition or the brake switch.
