6410 tractor pto won't engage

Hey, I'm covering for our real mechanic and we are having problems with our pto. It stopped working the other day and the driver claims he heard a loud pop. We tried it yesterday without a batwing on it and it seemed to spin fine. The only thing is it didn't work the first time we tried the switch, but worked another time which leads me to believe it's the switch that is malfunctioning. I'm going to try again in a couple of minutes when he comes in, but I was hoping someone might throw a couple of ideas about what else it may be.
