I just pruchased a JD 111 lawn tractor and the brake is not working. I would like to fix it myself but it would be nice to have some direction as to what needs to be done?

the clutch / brake operates throught the transaxle. the brake shoe mounts on the outside of a flywheel that comes off the left side of the the transaxle unit. replacement of the brakeshoe assembly takes about 15 minutes (if you're slow). if the problem is in the spring linkage that goes from the pedal to the brake assembly, then you'll be better off removing the fender body shell and it will take considerably more time. have fun.

My JD had the same problem, found the brake pad holder assembly frozen up. Remove the assembly (two bolts) from the rear end the pads will fall out easily. There is a metal plate behind the pad with 2 small push rods, check to see if the rods slide easily. If not lightly tap them while applying WD40 or other lubricant. Once they slide freely reassemble, this should do it for you.
