Ken N Tx Front mount or side mount??
tom front mount
aol.com checked points . they were open . cleaned them with sand paper . still won't crank! HELP!
Ken N Tx Take the coil off, gently stretch the spring at the bottom of the coil, replace the coil.

What do you mean when you say it won't crank??

tom the motor turns over real good. this tractor is a 12 volt system it has been converted for 6 volt. before this started. the motor run pretty good. it would stall alot but seam to straighten out. back fire a little but would continue to run well. setiment bowl started leaking around gas line, could not stop it , so i bought a new one. everything ok there now ,then this started.has not run since i changed bowl.
tom has been converted from 6 volt to 12 volt system ,sorry for my spelling. bleed the gas line to make sure gas was in carb. would not crank.
tom took coil off stretched spring on bottom , put back on motor turns over, won't crank. I do not have meter to check elect.parts. Please someone tell me the old way to check . starting with the battery! battery good, next? thanks
tom today i put a new distrubtor cap on my 8n still won't crank, o well thanks for the help.
lha It is posible that your coil has gone bad.it is critical that you get the resistor[s] to bring the voltage down to keep the coil to overheat.---lha

tom thanks . i'll try that next. the resistor between the coil and switch seems to be doing the job, but i'll change that to, thanks
Bob G on a 12 volt system unless you have a 12 volt coil yu need two restisters in the wire from switch to the coil. just the orginal ballast resister if you have a 12 volt coil.
adam hi have side mount 8n tractor --was sitting for around a year and half in bad shape (old man used till passing and was parked) anyways brought home stripped it painted it and doing wiring seen the ads to help me replace wiring no big deal tilll i got to the voltage regulator helpppppp no marking on it---all the ads showing the regulator the wires are all around the box help mine connect at the bottom of the box ----left to right which is the ground which is armature which is field helpppppp
tom i am sorry i don't understand the advice. are you saying i need two restisters between the switch and the twelve volt coil? because i see only one between the coil and switch and it has been running fairly good until recently.
tom i feel like i am witing a book here. i just checked my coil. i do have fire coming all the way through the coil . points are opening and closing when motor is turning over . put everything back together checked spark from spark plug wire ,have no fire . it looks like something in the distrubtor like points or condencer or rotor button is bad what do ya'll think?
hs tom wiliams w/ a 49 8N, where are you located? I just bought a 49 8N from a tom williams in Florida this weekend. How many tom williams own 8N tractors let alone 1949 models? Way strange!!
