8n Coil problem ?
| Jack | My 8n tractor has a problem of running for around 30 - 45 minutes and then the the engine would backfire and stop. Could not start it for some time. I changed water pump, had radiator cleaned and this did not solve the problem. Could it be the coil or what else should I check? Thanks, Jack |
| Bob G | If it is a front mount distributor, the coils are known to be a problem. Not neccesary that tho. when it stops jump off and check for spark right away. If you have spark then you have a fuel related problem. I don't know what a water pump would have to do with it dying unless it was getting real hot. if you have no spark it also could be the ign switch. good luck |
| Jim Loveridge | Even if it's a side mount distrubutor the coil can cause that. But check with a voltmeter if you can. Don't just start throwing parts at it.

| Larry | http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/rep.htm#q9d Try reading this web site. He says that when the coil windings get weak they don't work when hot. That is the main reason they quit working after the warm up and then your tractor quits. This is a great page read it and put it in your favorites.

| Matt | My '51 8N also runs for about 20 minutes then stops. It will restart, but immediately stops. When an abundance of time passes, it will start the cycle all over. I bought a coil (it takes the round one) and the coil indicates an external resister is required. The guy at the tractor shop says it is not needed on the 6-v system and I don't see such a resistor already installed on the tractor. Can I safely install the new coil without a resistor?
